Hello, I'm new to all of this and I wasn't able to find it anywhere on here, so please bear with me. It is my understanding that Wizards do not need to prepare ritual spells in order to use them. However these spells will not appear in your available spell list unless you prepare them. Am I missing something? Thanks for your time all!
As an update to this, I am also noticing that when looking at the Class Features on the character sheet, there isn't any mention of wizards being able to cast ritual spells without preparing them. Am I misunderstanding how this ability works? Is it something Wizards unlock at higher levels?
Certain spells have a special tag: ritual. Such a spell can be cast following the normal rules for spellcasting, or the spell can be cast as a ritual. The ritual version of a spell takes 10 minutes longer to cast than normal. It also doesn't expend a spell slot, which means the ritual version of a spell can't be cast at a higher level.
To cast a spell as a ritual, a spellcaster must have a feature that grants the ability to do so. The cleric and the druid, for example, have such a feature. The caster must also have the spell prepared or on his or her list of spells known, unless the character's ritual feature specifies otherwise, as the wizard's does.

Ritual Casting
You can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell in your spellbook. You don’t need to have the spell prepared.
If you're talking about how to denote this on your character sheet, keep this in mind: you're not using any resources that you need to keep track of in order to spend 10 minutes casting a ritual so it's not something you need to note on your sheet. You'd just tell your DM: "I cast Detect Magic as a ritual. Am I interrupted during that 10 minutes?"
There's only 3 things involved in this for you: Does your wizard have the spell in their spellbook? Does the spell have a ritual tag? Do you have 10 uninterrupted minutes and the components to cast the spell?
Huh, yes, that's a valid point. I guess I was completely over thinking it. Thank you for helping focus my mind correctly :p One last thing just to make sure I have it right. Detect Magic is normally 10 minutes to cast, so if you're casting it as a ritual would that then be 20 minutes to cast?
Detect Magic has a casting time of 1 action but has a duration of 10 minutes (as long as you concentrate). As a ritual it therefore takes 10 minutes to cast and lasts for 10 minutes or until you lose concentration, whichever comes first.

Technically it's new casting time is 10 minutes, 6 seconds (one action) and will last for 10/Concentration, but that's basically right.
You add 10 minutes to the casting time of a ritual, in addition to the listed casting time, and I was oversimplifying before.
True, but when you are taking 10 minutes to cast a spell, the original 1 action casting time is pretty much insignificant, especially since you are only likely to ritual cast when time is not an issue.
In this instance, yes. But Find Familiar for example can be cast as a ritual and takes 1 hour + 10 minutes. Didn't want to confuse anyone with my previous statement since I realized I could have been interpreted as "all rituals take 10 minutes".
Thanks all for the help! Yes, I'm now realizing that I was reading the casting time for Detect Magic as 10 minutes and not the duration time. This is all very helpful information that I will be taking into my next session whenever that may actually be. Gotta love playing for your first time, and then having to take 4 weeks off because various members of your game are out of town!
