Edit: I wanted to redo the thread because I thought it was poorly worded, needlessly long, and didn't get across what I wanted.
Anyways, I was thinking of trying out a subclass of Eldritch Knight (12 or 10) and war wizard (8 or 10). With this subclass I was wondering how I could get the most of my ability scores. What should I shoot for? What would be a good balance of ability scores (Str, Con, and Int)? Should I go with defense or GWF (I was wondering if GWF boosts booming blades damage significantly enough to take it over defense?)
Great Weapon Fighter, I think, which I would still NOT recommend regardless of booming blade (although I don’t know the answer to that question offhand.)
start off with fighter and continue leveling that up. So I'll likely wait till level six to get one or two levels of war wizard, then finish leveling up fighter, then focus on wizard.
Alternatively I could focus on wizard more and have more wizard levels then fighter levels (like fighter 2-6 and wizard X. in other words more wizard less fighter. Flipping the script of my original idea and going eldritch knight 3 war wizard or perhaps evocation X seems really fun. start out at fighter 1,with 14 8 16 16 10 10, level up wizard to level 8 and get intellegence to 20, then I can get fighter up to three, and then focus on wizard there on out. With heavy armor and shields, I could have some with with a war wizard who can use a sword. Kinda reminds me of how Gandalf carries a sword. Or I could just stick to two levels but that's not as interesting.). Although I don't see many good wizard/fighter subclass examples online so I wouldn't know how that would work out.

As for stats, I’d go 16, 8, 16, 14, 10, 8.
Yeah that makes sense to me. Defense is probably the better option. Oh, and I'm playing as a variant human by the way in case that changes anything
Agreed. I’m no expert, but i would think your stats would work fine. You would just be relying more on magic than physical attacks. And variant human works perfectly; just have your intelligence and constitution be 15 and your plus ones.
did some more tweaking, and because I don't really have a need for a level one feat, I'm going with 15 9 16 16 10 10.
And I probably Won't be taking three whole levels in fighter as I don't think that would be too beneficial (although it would be cool and I'd still get one level 5 spell slot).
Uhh… i’m pretty sure you want even stats. Thus the extra feat(s) would be great to resolve your 15 and/or 9. But you probably know more of what you are doing than I do.

I do try to go for even stats when making a character, and the reason I have 15 strength as opposed to 16 is because I just want to wear plate armor without any disadvantage. I also am not shooting for dexterity for the build I am making.
Although, looking at this has made me realize that artificer would be a better option. If I choose Vhuman I could take the heavily armored feat and leave it at that, OR I could have high dexterity with medium and light armor. Artificer is almost certainly a better option, but think of it this way: Nobody expects a wizard in heavy armor! (plus the class features of a war wizard can boost my AC further so I'm sure it will lead to some interesting and funny scenarios where the guy I'm fighting thinks I'm a human fighter and then suddenly I blast him with a fire ball or magic missile)
yeah, I’m all set. While artificer would be a better option… I just kinda like fighter. Having the armor and action surge is nice, even if it is not necessary. Either way, it’s a good time 👍

In what order will you take the levels? GWF?

Oh yeah, I forgot about armor. My bad.
i was actually going to mention Battle Smith Artificer so you could dump strength, but it sounded like you had already started your campaign.
