Me and a friend are unsure on how the spell Absorb Elements work, I read the description as being that the spell absorbs 1d6 of the element of damage so say for example out a total of 15 damage id6(6) is absorbed bringing the damage down to 9. I then understood the spell to give resistance to that damage after the initial damage was taken i.e. 9 damage. My friend read the spell description as giving the resistance to the initial damage who is right?
You take less damage than the full damage by the absorption of some of the damage to power your next melee attack I read the rules that the resistance then kicks in after the triggering attack, but I seem to be in the minorly in this. So for the example of the fireball, you have the save throw, so as you say 15 fire damage, but then you have the spell absorbing the fire damage lessening the damage you receive 1d6(6) at first level, so that would drop the damage down to 9, then if the resistance kicked in for this attack the damage would be 4. I read the spell applying the resistance to any future attacks but not this one, but as I say on the resistance side I seem to be wrong.
Reactions basically kick in a instant before the triggering event. Like take an attack of opportunity the trigger is them leaving your reach. If they have left your reach you'd just miss as they are outside your reach. So it needs to kick in the instant before they left to work. Shield would not stop the first attack etc. In this case the trigger is taking elemental damage and it kicks in the instant before that reducing the damage taken by 1/2. It is a bit ridiculous for a 1st level spell, but oh well.
You gain resistance to the triggering damage type until the start of your next turn. This means that the damage you take is immediately halved due to the resistance. For example, if you were to take 15 points of fire damage, you would take only 7 (rounded down from 7.5) after the resistance is applied.

I was under the impression that the resistance kicked in after the full damage of the triggering attack so I appreciate your reply. Thanks

Thanks for your comment on this I have a better understanding of the mechanics of the spell now.
