He would (obviously) be a wizard. I also put him as a half-elf because 1) he has an excellent beard and mustache and 2) it gives him the advantage against being charmed/can't be put to sleep, and skill increases
Skills would go in order of: Cha or Int, Dex, Wis, Con, Str.
In the movie he has the ability to: time travel. turn invisible, change form, and animating objects. He has incredible dex (skiing down the hill and on the lake) and great intelligence (supplied by his knowledge of the future). However, he's pretty absentminded and very much believes in brain over brawn, trying not to resort to violence. I think he'd be able to teleport, or travel to other planes (in the film he shouts "blow me to bermuda!" in frustration and accidentally blows himself to bermuda and the 20th century). I think he'd also have a bard multiclass for half proficiency in everything, and musical instruments (despite the fact that he doesn't play any in the films). I chose folk hero background because I feel that he'd be able to blend in with people. He also has a quarterstaff which I would say could double as his arcane focus (he has a wand that he regularly hits people with when they aren't paying attention).

Anything I missed?
I'd say use a Staff or Wand as a focus, because Quarterstaff doesn't count.
Second, a sorcerer does the sort of absent-minded spellcasting thing, because they normally don't have complete control over their powers (Wild Magic?). Background wise, Sage would make more sense, as he's probably sort of eccentric and wouldn't fit in as well.
Druids change shape, so maybe a small dip into them? Animating objects wise, a 6th Level College of Creation bard could pull that off, or just the animate objects spell
the inverse is not true though. A staff can be used as a quarterstaff, but a quarterstaff cannot be used as a staff. The staff is an arcane focus, and the quarterstaff is not.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

thank you kindly sir. you are looking immaculate
DMG page 140 states this regarding magic staves:

I mean, we could argue that it’s intended... but whatever man. You do you :)
I’m perfectly comfortable not arguing staff vs quarterstaff and not worrying about the 2gp difference.
What wizard subclass were you thinking?
If I was making movie or legendary Merlin, I'd go with Druid.
