Hey, making a new character for an upcoming campaign I'll be joining. Decided to do a Water Genasi Tempest cleric. My starts stats would be at level 1, after racial bonuses, WIS 18, STR 16, CON 14, CHA 13, DEX 10, INT 9. I was aiming for her to be a front line cleric in heavy armor, using weapon attacks more often than cantrips. I was thinking War Caster at level 4 so she could have a shield and trident and still be able to cast. Beyond that though I'm not sure what to do with her. I had pondered maybe taking a few levels in fighter to help her with a few weapon attacks, but not sure if that's a smart move for the only WIS character and full caster in the party. Any thoughts from y'all?
Tempest Cleric is a really fun build, it is a great melee cleric at low levels although it falls off a bit at higher levels as wrath of the storm becomes less potent. Here are a few recommendations:
Warcaster is great on this build.
I would not dip fighter, you would have to go a lot of levels to get extra attack. Instead I would look at Warlock or sorcerer. Either of these can get you booming blade which is very thematic on a tempest cleric, this will keep you close to extra attack while not needing all those levels.
Fathomless Warlock is thematic and the bonus action tentacle is more or less like a free spiritual weapon that I do not have to use an action to cast. You get both on a 1-level dip. For spells I would get Armor of Agathys as one of them, which you can use with cleric slots at higher levels. Stay away from save or attack spells with a 13 charisma.
Storm Sorcerer is also thematic and can get you shield, but the subclass is not very good.
Depending on the DM, another spell to look at is dissonant whispers from Fey Touched at level 8. Some DMs play that movement from DM causes AOOs, if that is how your table plays this combines VERY well with warcaster and booming blade.

Twilight Cleric is incredibly OP - but you need to stay monoclassed, because the reason it's so OP is the CD, which scales with your cleric levels. You don't need any sort of weapon - a shield and Toll the Dead are all you really need for when you don't want to spend spell slots. Your primary job is staying alive while your CD makes every fight trivial for the party.

The Darkvision is the most OP part of Twilight Cleric IMO as it is better than any other monster, class or race.
Twilight sanctuary is good, especailly at low levels, but it does not scale well only giving 1 hit point per level. To get the most out of it you need to use it in the first round and that is a high price to pay when you are normally opening with a powerful spell. It is outclassed by spells once you get to 7th level unless someone happens to be charmed or frightened. Aura of Life for example is generally better for keeping allies up and fighting. In short it is powerful but not OP IME.
The last PC we had die in a campaign died while Twilight Sanctuary was active. One of only two that have died in one of my games in the past 2 years.
In any case I think the poster is playing Tempest, not Twilight.
I played a twilight tempest cleric, with warcaster. I should warn you that before too long, I was just using spells, barely swung my weapon. Practically, the choice came down to swing my weapon one time at one target, using my str score. Or cast shatter, and hit multiple targets with my wis, for guaranteed half damage at least. And that’s not even accounting for things like the ol’ spirit guardians/spiritual weapon combo.
And remember you only ever get one attack. Even when blessed strikes come in, your cantrips will be more effective.
And I’d also recommend against fighter levels. I mean, action surge is nice, but it’s not worth delaying your spell progression. Especially if you are the only full caster, and I imagine that means the party healer. You’ll need those spell slots.

Getting the booming blade cantrip helps with attack damage lot. Also you can hit someone with booming blade then if he hits you and you use wrath of the storm damage him with lightning and move him 10 feet. This does not trigger the booming blade damage, however if the bad guy needs to move to attack you again he will take the booming blade damage
I’m currently playing a tempest cleric. I chose Tortle for race. The +2 to strength helps with the front line fighting. And the +1 to wisdom obviously helps with the spell casting. The free 17 in AC in a huge help.

My mistake. I should have written tempest in my post. I meant tempest.
Just had twilight in my head from the above posts.

IME call lighting is awesome with CD.
