Hey there, just really curious about something and hoping to see if this could get fixed or at least answered.
When looking up in the inventory search for either: Ball Bearings (bag of 1,000) or Caltrops (bag of 20), both items come up with an inventory count of 1,000 or 20 respectively. This doesn't make any sense. The 'quantities' should be 1! They both weigh 2 lbs... but it's corelated to the inaccurate quantities listed above. So, when scrolling through my inventory it says, for example, that I have 3,000 instead of 3... So, if I edit the quantities to show how many bags I have, it screws up the weight calculations.
In order to use these items, it says the entire bag is used. So... the inventory quantities (and corresponding weights) should be tied to how many bags of these things you have. Each time you use a bag, you dump out either 1,000 ball bearings or 20 caltrops per bag! My character doesn't have the option to reach into his bag of 1,000 ball bearings and grab a handful of, oh I don't know, say 200 ball bearings and use those! It's all or nothing! The details are in the tittle!
The quantity is listed as 1,000 or 20, respectively, so D&D Beyond has to reproduce that. Plus, while in order to perform the specific action listed in the item description, you have to use the entire bag, those are not the only way to use the item. There is absolutely nothing preventing a player from pulling one ball bearing out of the bag and throwing it in the opposite direction to distract a guard, or setting one caltrop on the top of a door to alert them if someone moves it.
If you do want to use them solely as single-use bags, you can use the 'customize' option in the sidebar to customize the weight after setting your quantity.
In order to use the bag for the one written use...there's plenty of other uses. There's a reddit post out there of a character who used 990 [I think that was the number] of them throughout the character's career for a huge variety of things (one example is jamming one into a keyhole). I think he said he was saving the last 10 for a special occasion.
saying there's only one use is like saying you can't use a piton to jam a door open or closed...because it doesn't say you can do that.
Its like counting arrows though, most don't usually care about the quantity.
the bigger (just imo) issue with ball bearings and caltrops is people think they can use them on a forest floor....that's ridiculous.

Ball bearings definitely not, but caltrops should be fine in a forest. Regular ground is weathered and packed so they have a plenty firm base.
Wow... Thank you all for that insight! I didn't even consider ANY of these ideas... and this makes MUCH more sense for the quantities as listed. Thanks everyone!
