I like the support Beyond has for typing custom backgrounds but you seem to still have to select one of the pre set background features. Most people who are doing custom backgrounds do so because they either want to choose their own proficiencies or they want to have some special feature because of their past at the discretion of the DM. This should be added I think.
You can create a background that doesn't pull from existing you choose to not base it off an existing template. You can also change all the text when homebrewing backgrounds.
Hm, oddly enough there are two types of custom background, I've found the one you're talking about I think by creating a background in your collection like you would do a monster, there is another type of custom background by selecting Custom in the description section of the character building and this method is slightly limited and doesn't let you edit the features.
Oh well, you've help me do what I wanted to do anyway, thanks.
