I tend to play games involving the variant encumbrance system, in which you can only carry STRx5 lbs of gear before losing 10 feet of speed. Which I'm glad to see D&D Beyond supports in a basic form.
However, with the exception of very strong characters, or characters that can travel very light (no medium or heavy armour, or any at all), you are almost always encumbered if you want to carry any meaningful equipment. To get around this you want to build your character with particular care towards the gear you character wears in combat, and what is kept within their pack, so that you can drop your pack when you're anticipating combat, or if surprised you either have to drop as an action, or take the hit while defending yourself.
Unfortunately it seems there's no way to manage anything like this in D&D Beyond at present, except to do it manually and declare it, so I'd like to propose a way to handle it like so:
Add support for Containers such as backpacks, pouches etc., which have carry weight restrictions for what they can contain, or what can be attached to them.
Add support for placing items inside these containers up to the container's maximum support weight capacity. Some items may instead (optionally?) be attached to a container in which case they do not count against the capacity, for example a coil of rope strapped to the outside of a back-pack.
Add support for wearing containers: while worn a container (and all items within or attached to it) is added to the character's total weight, otherwise it is ignored (as it has been dropped or stored somewhere).
Add support for items that can be equipped from inside a container, i.e- wielding a weapon from your backpack will deduct its weight from the pack, but add it to the player, before returning it to the container once the weapon is no longer being wielded.
Even for players no using the variant encumbrance system this may be a useful way to manage their inventory, and will make things easier in situations where they have had gear removed, pack stolen etc., as a few clicks would be able to quickly remove all containers.

Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.

Planned, this is.
