Yes I think this is confusing too. You can select multiple categories, you most probably selected the armor section first.
From a UX point of view, this is because icons lay out like this are usually used as bullet points, those are associated with one selection at a time. A different layout might prove to be clearer.
Adding a simple check mark when selecting the icons, and on hover of the icons, might convey the information that this is a multiselection.
I see that when you click a category that one sticks selected and you can choose others. The first time it was refreshing and unselecting all others, but still items would show.
I think the issue is the refresh of the page... I don't like the whole page to refresh on selection, it should just refresh the item table.
