So I've been running games on Fantasy Grounds for years for my group but I recently subscribed to DDB to see if using the maps tool would work for us as we play so infrequently now that when we do it is like learning FG over again with the amount of updates they do. So I've spent the last 2 days messing with Maps, watching videos that seem to be pretty outdated (2023, 2024) etc and getting answers from Google AI that don't seem to be accurate so I'm hoping someone can help me out here.
1. First is it possible for me to run maps in one tab as a DM and another as a player? This would be the ideal way to learn but it seems impossible unless I set up a separate DDB account. I want to see how the player experience is, for example do they need to bounce back and forth between maps and their character sheet or can they call up the sheet in Maps.
2. According to Google Maps is supposed to have a targeting tool, I think that's not accurate or I'm as blind as a bat. So it seem a character or a DM can select a target and make a roll to attack, save etc and also auto apply damage. Seems such a basic concept for a VTT but it appears not to existed in Maps.
3. There doesn't seem to be any updates to the change log since January, this concerns me that perhaps Maps is no longer a priority.
I guess these are my main questions, maps doesn't seem to be on par for any current VTT which is fine but if it is dead for their new 3D tabletop then I'll likely cancel my subscription.
Regarding #1, there is a button at the bottom that looks like a monitor and is labeled "Spectator View". Clicking this will launch a new tab with a player view of the map.
1. Yes, either through the spectator tool or by opening D&D Beyond in an incognito tab and logging in with an account that's a player in the campaign
2. There's no "targeting" tool, but there are ping and pointer tools
3. The Changelog is updated quarterly so there should be one coming soon. But there have been updates since Jan, just check the articles on maps that have passed through there homepage
