Currently, when you join a campaign via a campaign link, you are taken directly to character creation. While I believe a player should be able to make any character they would like (with DM approval), it would be helpful if you could view the current party composition prior to building your character so you might be able to fill in a weak spot.
A campaign I'm in just added it's sixth member, who chose to be the third fighter and the second arcane archer in a party that does not have any source of healing. I think it will be interesting for sure, but we might have leaned toward a different player experience if more information was available to those joining a campaign.
The simplest solution for now is to just make an initial choice or two so you have a dummy character to fill the slot, then you can see the other characters. Then you can decide what to make and edit your character accordingly. Granted, that doesn't help if you want to choose a character you had previously made.
It would be a nice feature. Maybe the campaign link could take us to the page, where we'd see a blank slot assigned to the player, along with all the other characters already in the campaign. Then we'd click there to either add an existing character or create a new one.
Just create a new character when you join a campaign.
If you dont fill in anything, you have the not ready character and you can look at the rest in the campaign.
Then you can continue to create what class and race you need.
And if you have one ready that you want to use you just leave the campaign and join with the one you want.
Granted, creating a character and then viewing the campaign is a workaround, but especially for new players or those joining for a campaign run remotely, it is not an intuitive one. I believe the feature to see the campaign's party by default would create the best user experience.

I love this. Why not kill two birds with one stone?

I'm not stupid. I'm just unlucky when I'm thinking.
