I was trying to add some dried giant toad legs that my character got in a campaign, but it won't let me edit the item weight no matter how many times I try. Any reason this might be happening? Everything else modified just fine when I'm on the edit area in equipment--except for cost and weight
I'm only here to say how delightful your specific example of a custom item is, and also to ask how you figured out how much dried giant toad legs weigh?
This question bothered me more than it probably should have, so here I am again the best part of an hour later to note that a dried giant toad leg probably weights about 70 lbs.
I estimated this, making extensive use of Google, as follows: 1. The largest real frog or toad is the goliath frog, which is roughly 1 foot long and weighs a bit less than 7 lb. 2. In 5th Edition, the giant toad is a large creature. The 2nd Edition Monstrous Compendium pegs an ice toad, which is also large in size, as 8 feet in length. 3. Using the square-cube law, we can estimate that if something doubles in length, its mass increases 8-fold. Scaling up a goliath frog from 1 foot in length to something 8 feet long, means it has doubled in sized three times. So we need to multiply the goliath frog's weight by 8 x 8 x 8. This gives us a weight of about 3400 lb for a giant toad. For comparison, a horse, which is also a large creature, weighs about 2200 lb, so 3400 lb seems about right for a fatter giant toad.) 4. Guesstimating based on various D&D pictures of giant toads, I'd say that the legs are about 25% of its total body mass, or about 850 lb for all four legs. That means each leg weighs roughly 210 lb. 5. According to some very distracting websites on making beef jerky, it seems that dried meat typically weighs about a third as much as fresh meat. Since these are specifically dried, we need to divide the 210 lb by three, to give us a final estimate of 70 lb. for each dried giant toad leg.
Hahahaha, we ended up battling some on a swamp and my ranger also has outlander for a background; so I asked the DM if I could essentially make dried giant frog leg jerky and he gave me the go ahead after I rolled a nat 20. :'DDD
Considering he stated one leg could be used to cook a meal to fill up a party, and going by the dry rations being 2lbs each (and our party being 6) we were estimating them at around 12lbs worth per leg--so enough for two different meals for the whole party.
But sweet Yisus, now I can't get off my head the thought of 70lbs giant frog leg jerky XDD
EDIT: Man I just can't math today I swear
Also i showed this to my DM and he was very amused, but cleared in his calcs he based the weight on what he thought my ranger could carry. So potentially we could have harvested more frog leg meat if we'd actually had ways to transport and such.
Inb4 my ranger ends up opening a restaurant one day :'DD
So… It's been three years and no administrator has addressed the issue. That's pretty concerning. Especially since I'm having the same problem here in 2020.
I am able to edit the weight of items just fine in the homebrew. Make sure you click on the big blue <SAVE CHANGES> button after your edits to save it.
You can also directly edit the weight of items in your character sheet's inventory by clicking on an item and then <Customize>.

I realize I'm very late to the party, but I just want to thank you for not only providing excellent information, but also for showing your work. You are a credit to unnecessary-trivia seekers everywhere.
Also, if you're still struggling with weight probs, its under "Additional Information" in the homebrew edit page.
So I found this post because I was having the same issue trying to get the weight to register on homebrew items and I may have figured out what to do.
If you have checked your info for the item and its confirmed saved, but still not showing up, try removing it from your collection and re-adding it. It seemed to work for me.
P.S. I know this post started 3 years ago, but if I found it, surely others will as well and I hope this information helps.
Holy Bats, I'm still having this issue! When I create a Custom Item From Scratch, no matter what I put in the Weight section, it registers as Null. What are y'all actually inputting into that field to get it to work? I've tried "15", I've tried "15lb", I've tried "15 lb", and nothing does anything. What the heck?
I just got here from a search because I was having the same issue with a pair of 2 lb boots. Fixed it by changing the Weight Override to 2000 which jumped it to 2000 lbs, then dropped it back to 2. I can't explain why this worked.
I wanted to add a 5lbs book. so type in 50 and then clicked away to the notes comment box and it adds the weight to 50. Then go back and take off the 0, then click away again and bingo! book is now 5lbs.
For a bug thats been going on Since 2018... This desperately needs fixing D&DB lol.
Thanks MatthewKerwin, that was doin' my head in!

I was also having this problem. I even got the cost to change but not the weight...
