So the changelog has been posted detailing the site changes for the 2024 Players Handbook. It is now clear that once the changeover occurs we will not be able to make a character using the 2014 rules. It seems we've been lied to for the past few months about how the 2014 rules are still valid and will be supported on the site.
Spells and (and items when the new DMG releases) are being REPLACED with the 2024 versions. The 2014 versions will no longer be accessable. If you want to continue using them you must homebrew your own versions. You will get access to the new ones for free, but that's no use if you don't want to switch.
Descriptions, tooltips and compendium links will all reference the 2024 rules. There will be no way to have the 2014 rules on your character sheet, you will need to manually look them up yourself. As this applies to conditions like exhaustion I assume you will not be able to track such things using the 2014 rules either, and will have to record them manually somewhere.
In essence, if you don't switch to the 2024 rules, the chracter sheet will be virtually unusable without a lot of extra work, eliminating the whole purpose of using it.
If this is the way DnDBeyond have chosen to go, there needs to be a proper announcement on the front page stating that the 2014 rules are no longer supported. As it is, all the communication we've had (limited as it is) has been that we can continue using the 2014 rules, which is clearly incorrect.
They need to make all 2014 material Legacy and available on current character sheets and only make the 2024 available on those characters built with 2024 access. For those who do not have 2024 access, but do have 2014 access, they should only see 2014 material. It's called licensing!!
Yeah they really need to consider the customers that are paying for their services. I've been running a campaign on D&D Beyond for 6 years and we don't have plans to switch rules until we're done with this campaign. Now I'm basically being forced to switch, or homebrew all the 2014 spells for my all my player's classes.
Just give us a choice between 2014 and 2024 content on a campaign-by-campaign or character-by-character basis...
DnDBeyond NEEDS a 2014/2024 rules toggle on a per character/campaign basis and all updated content NEEDS a legacy version for continued use under 2014 rules games.
The GM MUST be able to set this at the campaign level and users should be able to set this on their own characters that are outside a campaign.
I've just been looking at the old book s in the marketplace and they all seem to have this message in the "What's Inside" section.
2024 and BEYOND!
The 2024 Core Rulebooks provide new options for players and DMs along with updates and improvements to the classes, mechanics, items, and monsters of fifth edition. All updates are being done with care to make sure anything from fifth edition will continue to be fully playable.
The 2024 rules revisions are designed to be fully compatible with everything you’re playing today in fifth edition. In response to nearly a decade of fan feedback, the 2024 core rulebooks will offer players and DMs tons of new character options, spells, feats, monsters, items, and more in a fun, balanced, and accessible approach to playing DUNGEONS & DRAGONS.
Now, I'm sure there'll be some weasel-wording from WotC about what "fully playable" means, but I think most people will read that as being able to use either set of rules, not that old rules and content are being removed. It needs to be replaced with a clear message that 2014 rules are no longer supported, especially in a book like Tasha's or Xanathar's where so much of the content is spells & items.
Time to send a message. If you don't like the enforced switch, cancel renewal of your paid subscription. That seems to be the only language WOTC understands.

I'd love to cancel, unfortunely my account has all the shared content and characters for multiple games, and some of my players can't or won't manage with pen & paper. So I either continue my subscription, or stop playing D&D altogether. They've got me over a barrel with regards to the site, but since the a la carte removal I'm not spending any other money on DnDBeyond purchases or any other WotC product.
Ok in that case what about people with a year subscription? I paid for access to 2014 books not 2024. I have the books for that edition. I didn't pay or agree to have items i paid for readjusted or changed. I paid for books working with 5e not other version.
Do they have a right to do that? Can we cancel and get refunds for subscriptions and books if they wont be accessible the way we paid for, etc?
I'm currently looking into other options that will allow me to keep the 5e info going. Currently looking at Roll20 and DungeonMastersVault. Beyond that, I am planning on cancelling my account when the switch becomes mandatory as this is some BS

Bugger it, I've gone ahead and cancelled anyway. Either we'll move to Roll20/Foundry or the players can get their own content on here, I'm not giving DnDBeyond\WotC any more money until things change. If it ends up being that I can no longer play D&D then so be it.
If they reverse this decision then I might reconsider, but on past experience I doubt we'll even get a response to our complaints, let alone any actual change.
Yup, paid for a yearly subscription a while ago, now I’m pissed. Will start backing up all of my character sheets on a competitors website immediately and will no longer give any more of my money to this website unless they give a toggle option and do NOT force me to change my sheets for my current characters. Was honestly tempted to buy some of the online content on here for easier use. Will NOT be buying anything.
It's not just the spells themselves though, anything that references or grants a spell will be switched to the new rules. To continue using the 2014 rules going forward
every subclass that grants spells needs to be homebrewed
every item that grants spells needs to be homebrewed
every warlock invocation that grants spells - these *cannot* be homebrewed and will not be usable with 2014 rules
every class that grants extra spells (mainly through the Tashas expanded spell lists) - as far as I know these also *cannot* be homebrewed so will be unusable.
every monster that casts spells will need to be homebrewed
I'm sure there'll be more as we think things through over the weekend, but this is much more than just copying the spells, to the point that I don't see any way to use the 2014 rules on DnDBeyond going forward.
This is a big hit for my West march server.... Its annoying to see we were told it would be backwards compatible and able to continue playing with the old set of rules... When it comes out now I have to explain to so many people why... I guess I should start making a document now to keep the 2014 changes for my server and code it.

The thing is, everyone will have access to the 2024 material due to Basic rules and the SRD.
Personally I think a simple solution would be when you create a character, you choose what version to use and then you use the options tied to that year.
So if I want to play All-Smite, my Paladin that smites on every hit, I just pick to make a 2014 Paladin and I can only use 2014 stuff
But if I want to play the Nerfed Paladin that uses BA Smite then I pick the 2024 Character Option and use whatever options with that year
If they can seperate races by Legacy/Non-legacy they can do it with classes/items ans spell
You'd need to read the EUA/Terms of use to answer that. They may have reserved the right to changed, remove, or add content to the things you've paid to have digital access to. I haven't done that but the answer to "can they" is in there.

DungeonMastersVault is certainly a option but you have to manually put in a lot of the stuff. And Roll20s UI is a nightmare
Does anyone have any other ideas of places to go?

To copy my post from another thread:-
Crap like this was why Tales of the Valiant was created - I'd rather switch to that than 1DND

will be removing my subscription also
