Money spent on Content (such as PHB/DMG/MM) also grants an equal amount of subscription time at master tier.
So if you spend $20 on PHB at release you get 3 months of free master tier ($6/mo.)
Reason:
The idea of having a monthly fee on top of the considerable upfront cost, and the cost of adding new books every year is a bit daunting. However, if I know buying the new years books would cover the subscription (at least for a few months), it would make it a much easier purchase for me.
Doesn't make sense - a not insignificant number of people purchasing a book will not need, nor benefit from, subscription.
And those that will want and benefit from a subscription might only want the hero tier rather than the master tier, which means a more complicated tracking process - not to mention that if master tier subscription doesn't actually cost anything if someone buys the book is completely undercutting the reason why the master tier exists because it would enable everyone buying a book to share that book with up to 12 others.
Basically, you're saying the equivalent of "Suggestion: Money spent on a burger also grants an equal value of fries and/or drinks."
Both your caveats don't actually create issues, If they don't want the subscription, then they don't use it. If they only wanted the hero subscription, the master subscription includes it (I assume).
Difference is that fries cost money to include with a hamburger, active subscription doesn't actually cost money. The cost to maintain the website is the same if you just had the books to access or have a subscription. The point of the suggestion is to take some of the sting off of the idea of dropping $100+ and then still being told you need to pay per month.
It would enable someone who buys the book to share with people for X amount of time. The PHB as listed would allow you 3 months of sharing. After which they have to subscribe to continue. Or buy more books, either way more money is being shoveled to Curse.
Finally to be perfectly honest I assume they built the cost of 12 people sharing into the pricing plan. As they announced it as a feature. That is to say, if 12 people access the content 1 person purchases, Curse is still going to make money. Especially considering the 11 non-master accounts will be generating Ad revenue everytime they access the content.
My caveats do create issues - for Curse, the company providing the purchase options.
Because why do fries cost money to include with a hamburger? The company providing the burgers and fries wants them to for the sake of sustaining their business.
Your "take the sting off" is no different from my "unreasonably demand freebies". Especially because there is no "sting" in the first place because no one is forcing anyone to pay any amount - it's the consumer's choice, just like you aren't mandated to buy a burger, fries, or both, just because Burger King happens to exist.
