I've been playing D&D for well over 25 years. For most of that time I've been DM. My first attempt to "out-source" was to get my little brother to help out with simple encounters (the ones that weren't part of the big story). He'd research monsters and everything for me. I'd essentially say, "Yeah I'm looking for a medium difficulty ambush here, can be anything, I just need the group softened up for the next big bad". He'd actively manage the encounter as I focused on the story. In time he was known as "DM-Spawn" by the players :). Soon as he got older they converted him into a player alas..
Sorry long story short. There is a huge community of fans. Our group moved from 2nd Ed to 5E. 2nd Ed had a lot of information (supplemental materials, books that have filled our shelves over the years). That's an immense amount of data over time. We can help. Heck if I can help Google Translate books and street addresses using Captcha Verification I can do something for DDB.
Now putting my IT hat on. I'm also CIO in public sector and work with big data. If the team at DDB takes it's time it wouldn't be very difficult to build out a system that allows regular people to influence development and content beyond just posting in forums. Whether they are art assets, rules input/validation, publicly posted quests/adventures, custom monsters, items, NPCs, etc available for wider consumption.
For example, wouldn't it be great to drop in a pre-built town into an adventure that has it's own history, story, NPCs, etcs. For some DM's it would be placed as a pit stop to be largely ignored, for others it could become the hub of activity for the next level or two. All player generated in advanced and of course customizable by the DM for their specific needs.
Popular (or those in-line with whatever standards are set) items, monsters, could find a way to formally enter cannon.
Anyways rambling again. Don't limit your imagination to the team at HQ :). Bring us along for the ride and we just might show you a good time :)
With thank for everything you guys are working on.
