I tried to give my homebrew race a feature that would recharge on a 5-6 on a d6 akin to dragon breaths. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be possible. The feature will always say 1/0 or 0/0 on the character sheet.
I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but if you want an ability to recharge on a dice roll, you just need to include that in the description. As far as I know there's no variable needed for a recharge.
But even if you do that, it says "1/0" in the little description box in the action tab. That's my issue. I don't see a way to add something like "1/5-6(d6)" or "recharge on 5-6".
My issue is the little box in the action tab where it would say 1/SR for other abilities.
I don't know what 1/0 is. I don't see it when I changed dragonborn breath weapon to recharge. Screen shot or link to test character and homebrew please.
You need to set the charges to 1, recharge condition other, and specificy in the description it recharges on a roll of a 5-6. That'll give you one charge that you can reset on the specified condition. It's the same for all special reset conditions
This is the character. When you go to actions and look at the table at the top in the "notes" section, where it would say 1/SR and says things like "martial" for other actions, it says "1/0", or maybe it is "1/O", in this case. I'd like it to specify how to recharge there, too, instead of only in the description downstairs.
It already has one charge and the recharge is specified in the description, that part is working fine, I am just talking about a suggestion to the "notes" section to make it possible to add a "recharge on xy" option there.
Yes, that's my issue. I know there are workarounds, but I feel like it's reasonable to ask to add support for recharge on dice roll features. In this case I'm probably going to just change it to 1/SR, for now.
And yes, you are right, I'm going to put more snippets in, I'm reworking all races for my homebrew world and I just started with this one for a one-shot, because it's one of the simpler ones.
All ability recharges are description based as there's so many ways to recharge abilities; at dawn, on a short rest, on a long rest, when you perform a certain action etc. That's why the 'Other' category of recharge exists, to cover all these including the one you're trying to create.

That is not true, short rest, long rest, and dawn are not part of the "other" category, and short and long rest abilities even recharge their abilities. All three of them have designations in the "notes" sections of the actions, x/SR, x/LR, x/D, respectively.
I am merely suggesting to remove recharge on dice roll from the "other" category and to add it to its own category. It's a common enough mechanic that it warrants it getting its own thing. There's still enough other things the "other" category can cover. My suggestion isn't a big change or complicated in any way, it's just to add a way to convey the recharge interval in the "notes" section of the action itself. I am aware of workaround, I am suggesting adding something so you do not need the workarounds anymore.
Sorry, I probably should've been clearer. I meant there's dawn, long rest, short rest, plus the other category to cover everything else.
Recharging on a dice roll is not a player facing ability, it's a monster ability. As such, it would not make sense to break it out into its own criteria. You'll notice that there are no "Recharge X-Y" abilities for PCs, it's exclusively monster facing (like multiattack vs PCs extra attack)
Would you then suggest that, design-wise, it's not a good idea for me to put it on a race a PC can choose? Maybe rather use once per SR or a modifier per LR?
Hmmm, I'd think so, yeah. Monster monster that have recharge X-Y do so because they don't have an 'adventuring day' where they have to conserve resources. They're designed to 'go nova' in a fight and giving a monster a recharge balances for that. For example, if you have a monster with recharge 5-6, that means they're going to be able to use that ability roughly every 3rd turn. If a combat is expected to last around 5-6 turns, they'll be able to get it off once or twice on average. That's going to be it for their whole day effective, you rarely fight the same monster multiple times in a day.
Compare that to a PC with a once per short rest ability, which is reliably once per fight really. Or X per long rest where X is some ability modifier. Those effectively work out the same as the recharge ability, but are balanced for the adventuring day.
I'm not saying your idea was bad, not at all. It just occupies some design space usually reserved for monsters and you'll likely encounter some weirdness using it for PCs
As a DM, I know the joy I get when the dice land on a 5 or 6. I wanted to bring that joy to PCs, too, but only if that's a good idea, design-wise.
I think I might keep it at 1/SR for now and see how it plays in action, maybe change it to CON/LR, but that feels more like a class feature than a race feature.
I agree that there's a bit of a dark joy to getting that recharge ability back as a DM, but I think that players need some more reliability from their characters.
I think Con/LR would be fine for a racial ability, but 1/SR is also fairly good.

Yeah this shouldn't be hard. Reset type other, limited use 1. And put the recharge in the name or description.
Of course I can put it in the description.

Ah, I finally found your 1/O. It does mean "once per other" or at least that is what it says it means when you hover on it.
As for getting recharge to show on the action, name the action "sand breath (recharge 5-6)". And you should also put more snippets in that race.

Thank you for bearing with me and helping me understand the design choices behind these features!
Hey, no worries. Thank you for being so receptive to ideas that may have seemed critical. We got there in the end.
