I mean I can’t understand how company’s like Astral Table and roll 20 have put out options for online play before Dnd Beyond. A robust, incredibly well made and intuitive video game quality feature should be one of the reasons we have subscriptions! That effortlessly pulls together people from all over the world and takes their characters and unlocked content and allows them to play efficiently over the computer or mobile. Especially in light of the the pandemic and so many wanting to play together it’s a glaring under performance to not have this feature. Tell me whyyyyyyy????
Because DDB wasn't designed/established with the intent to be a VTT. It was designed to be a tool and resource to make table play more convenient.
A VTT has been added to long term plans due to popular demand. And they add more and more tools that would be needed for that. Still a few years away though.
Roll20 has been developing their VTT since a while before D&D Beyond even came into existence.
Astral has only just started and doesn't offer anything other than a VTT
Developing a VTT takes a lot of time and resources and it's currently not D&D Beyond's singular focus. They're working instead on offering tools to benefit people are digital and physical tables, as well as all the content WotC makes to be compatible with those tools. A lot of people use D&D Beyond with existing VTTs (such as myself) so I think it serves them well to focus on tools and content rather than a VTT service.
