I've been creating a homebrew subclass and am having trouble with the range input for attack actions. There are currently only two options on the dropdown menu labeled "attack range": "ranged" and "melee." The class that I want to make summons a whip, which the character can then use to attack, so I naturally chose "melee." The problem is that then the range listed for the attack on the character sheet is automatically set to 5ft. A whip is a reach weapon, so I would like it to say 10ft, but I can't figure out a way to get it to do this. I have tried to simply type in "10ft" in the "range" box on the homebrew creation page, but it is greyed out when you select "melee" as the attack range (you can only type something if you choose "ranged" from the dropdown menu). The only option to get the proper 10ft range to display on the character sheet seems to be to set the attack as ranged on the creation page, but then, of course, the attack displays as "ranged" on the character sheet. Now, I'm not likely to forget that it is in fact not a ranged weapon when I'm in a situation where this matters (if I'm within 5ft, or attacking someone who is prone, etc.) but I would like everything on the character sheet to be accurate (partly because I'm particular and partly to help out my DM), so this isn't ideal.
Am I being dense and just not seeing the way to note that something is a reach weapon or an attack with reach? Are there any possible workarounds that I can use to get my character sheet to accurately reflect the attack type and range?
If I'm not being dense, and there isn't currently a way to do any of this, then I'd like to give a plug for adding this option! I realize the D&D Beyond team has got loads of things they're working on, but consider this: of the 18 martial melee weapons listed in the PHB, 5 are reach weapons (so just over 1/4). It would be great if we could have a way to tap into these for our homebrew class creations :)

My suggestion would be to homebrew a magic whip. Give it the same name as your class feature, add the relevant modifiers, and set its weight to zero.
Thank you for the suggestion! I hadn't thought of that. The only problem is there doesn't seem to be a way to make my character proficient with whips to get the right hit/dc number to display (his class doesn't give him proficiency with martial weapons). *Sigh* I think I might just have to resign myself to something being wrong on my character sheet, and just choose which I'd rather that be.
Thanks again for the suggestion though, it's definitely an option I'll consider!
I've had the same problem. I was trying to create a custom weapon with reach, but there is no way to adjust it in the custom attack section, and when you use a different item as a base, you run into other issues of stats carrying over that shouldn't that you can't change.
I wish magic item creation (or just item if you use common modifier) had the option to use the same tables as the custom attack on the character sheet also.
Make the feature as normal but disregard range & then save.Once the action is made go down to level override and input the range you want for it then save & you’re done

On the character sheet click on the proficiencies, go to add new proficiences dropdown, choose weapon, choose whip.
That should give your character the whip proficiency outside of normal proficiency. Let me know if you have any issues.
Oh, awesome! I was trying to do it through the "edit character" function.
Thanks again! This seems like the best solution.

Don't know if it's a glitch or a feature but found a workaround for this.
Make the action a ranged attack and add the range of the reach you want
Save that
Go back to editing the action and set it to melee. Don't change anything else
Save that
Presto chango you have a melee attack with the selected range on the character sheet
