I was looking at starting a campaign with characters at "Level 0" when they start, and at the end of the first session, they select a class and move to level 1. They would start with Race and Abilities (and likely with a Class in mind). Basically Commoners. Hopefully to get some cool story setups, allow the players a moment to RP and fight without abilities, and also potentially change their class after getting a little feel for who their character is.
I noticed that you can't view a character sheet unless it has a Class selected. Not sure if it would be too big of an undertaking to make it work.
Clearly this isn't a 5e rule, but looking at the sheet as it is, stripping out the class features doesn't seem like it would change the layout. Besides just ... not adding things like the Spells tab, or Class Features, they wouldn't have a Hit Dice count, so my assumption would be d4, like Commoners have. I'd assume a proficiency bonus of +1, for those skills you choose in your Background.
While 'level 0' play is a popular homebrew, it is still a significant change to the core rules of D&D, core rules that D&D Beyond has to respect. DDB always aims to reflect the rules as accurately as possible, as presented in the content made by Wizards of the Coast, and we cannot create our own rules for the game.
As you mention in your post, a lot of assumptions would have to be made, assumptions D&D Beyond isn't at liberty to make, although should WotC release official rules of level 0 play, DDB will endeavour to reflect those on the site.
I hear ya. And I certainly appreciate that DDB remains faithful to the rules.
I figure maybe at some point when we can homebrew classes, making an empty "Level 0" class would be an easy fix. I guess I was hoping just allowing us to view our character sheets with no class filled in (as if just looking at your paper character sheet without filling in the character information yet. I'll hold out a little hope for the future, I guess.
