I know there are DOZENS of these threads, but I wanted to supply my topic with screenshots to demonstrate the issue. As the topic title states, I am creating homebrew Cantrip spells that scale as the character levels. Unfortunately, this is not working properly. My settings for the spell are:
As you can see, with the settings that I have, and my test character at level 11, the dice value for this spell should be 3d8, not the 1d8 the system is showing/rolling.
Try Type: Additional Points and for the dice roll put the full value (ie 2d8, 3d8, etc).
No luck. I am unable to explain why these changes happened, but in my changing to use "Type: Additional Points", and that being the only change that I made, the following act differently:
Leveling 1-10, no change to the damage dice of my spell
At level 11, the damage die increases from 1d8 to 2d8
At level 17, the damage die increases from 2d8 to 3d8
Did you create the spell from scratch, or did you use an existing cantrip as a template? That's how I usually make mine, and it's what the above example was based on -- a UA cantrip that I saved before it got removed, so I didn't change anything from what DDB used.
This one was created from scratch with exactly the same settings as a pre-existing official spell as my template. So, fundamentally, it should work. But here we are...
I'd love to be able to dump an item in my players' equipment, have them grab a homebrewed spell, etc. without then having to tediously adjust all of the customization options. It should just be ready to go and work - especially with the exact same settings as a pre-made spell.
When you choose Character Level or Spell Level scaling the modifiers at Higher Level will replace the base modifier.
Essentially you are telling the system that at 5th level the damage of 1d8 is to be replaced with... 1d8. Thus, no change seems to happen upon reached 5th level.
Your At Higher Level modifiers should be 2d8 at 5th, 3d8 at 11th and 4d8 at 17th.
So make these changes, save, wait 20 mins, refresh character sheet and you should see it scale correctly.

Seems convoluted compared to how the tooltips explain the creation, but I'll give it a go. If I'm choosing Additional Points, you'd think that it means "in addition to"...not "as a replacement".
*EDIT* As suggested above, waiting overnight to look at the spell, again, it has corrected itself and is now scaling properly based on the character level. Must have been too impatient, initially.
GPyromania, if you could still take a look and make sure it seems as it should, I'd appreciate it! it will really help me enter the rest of the spells for my Humblewood campaign.

Can you post a link to your homebrew spell so that a mod such as myself can take a look? It doesn't need to be public for us to view it.
Sure thing!
