I have being dnd since 1980, I have played every edition except 4th. Just recently I have started playing 5e and I feel that fighters have been weakened and truly left behind. Weapon mastery and Weapon specialization that allowed you to greatly specialize your character are no longer available. I am just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on some homebrew rules. Thanks

Have you seen the new 2024 Player's Handbook? The Weapon Mastery feature in it goes some way toward helping the issues you're talking about, I think. You might also consider the Battle Master subclass which allows a bit more customization than some of the others.
How are the better? I get this reply alot and nobody explains it. I can have a 1st level that has +3 hit and+3 dmg with a weapon as well as 3/2 attack. That is just with weapon proficiency in previous edition.

I don't have an opinion on the question, but things like that are not comparable across editions. The value depends on the relative abilities of other classes.

In 5th that first level fighter could easily have +5 to hit, +3 damage (with point buy, or +6 to hit, +4 dmg with manual rolls), get 2 attacks per round, the ability to heal himself during a fight (second wind), the ability to heal himself during a short rest, and I haven't even touched on how the fighting styles are better or going human and starting with a feat. Starting at 2nd level, Action Surge, and starting at 4th level a free feat or ability score adjustment every 2 levels.
5th edition fighters were stronger (both more survivable and if considering all the ability score adjustments they can get, physically stronger too) than any previous edition's fighter class (and i've played them all).

Fighters haven't been nerfed at all.
5e Fighters were better than v3.5 Fighters, and 5e24 Fighters are better still.
Playing D&D since 1982
Have played every version of the game since Basic (Red Box Set), except that abomination sometimes called 4e.
