I'm having a difficult time creating my homebrew Staff of Defense. https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/1644804-staff-of-defense has "at will" listed in the Spells tab on a character who has them equipped and attuned. I can't figure out, and can't find listed on google, how to make the spells properly represent their casting cost like official content does.
I'm aware I can just tell my players to manually spend the charges, but I was hoping for a more efficient solution.
You have to give the item charges and then configure the spells to use charges. My advice would be to find and copy an item that already does this and see how, for example the Staff of Power

Already done, it is based on the Staff of Healing. I have also set the spells to have Min AND Max of 1 Charge use.
Problem self-resolved; seems that the function needed time to update properly.
