There were optional crit rules in the app/website. Normally it's double dice, but that can even be anticlimactic. We play with max dice + roll. This ensures critical hits are always dramatic.
As an alternate, could there just be a toggle to NOT change the dice thrown if a character gets a critical? Right now, if I roll a 20, D&D Beyond will automatically double the number of dice thrown for damage. It would be a nice improvement to be able to turn that off, and it wouldn't break any of the game rules.
If your game says "Double the number of dice thrown", then leave the option true.
If your game says, "Max plus dice", turn it off. Click the button for normal damage and then manually add max value
If your game says, "Double the value of the normal dice thrown"; (i.e. 1d6 * 2, not 2d6), then turn it off. Click the button for normal damage and double the dice roll manually.
But since DDB always throws the extra dice, you need to ignore the second value and then do the math from only the first dice thrown (and not cheat and take the higher value).

I'd be cool if...

Thanks for the cool app/website
It'd be up to Wizards of the Coast to decide to publish such rules. The content on DDB matches what appears in the physical books.
