Rather than make all new classes I’d like to apply subclasses to other classes. Wizard alchemist. Also I’m still waiting on a feat to add one or two infusions.
Then just make a homebrew wizard subclass, make a homebrew feat and add the infusions manually via the Extras menu on the character sheet itself.
Unrelated, this is clearly something that's been asked for for YEARS now and still hasn't been implemented. I understand that it's not something to be rushed and you probably want it to be as good as possible, and it's not that easy, but it's going on three years now, maybe even more. Surprised it isn't even in alpha.

They should probably release one without the technical parts just as an alpha version. Even if it doesn't work on D&D beyond character sheets, it would still allow people to organize and share the class.

Welp just spent the last hour reading all the pages in this thread. As useless as all the Fan Boys are making my opinion out to feel I want this feature too. I understand other things need to get done but maybe have some people work on this as well? Its not like a whole business with multiple employees can only work on one thing at a time. Is there even a roadmap anymore? The trello board is gone.

The short answer is that the business is short on resources, especially manpower. While they have multiple development teams, each team is for developing different things, and most of them are not interchangeable. Dentists, surgeons, general practitioners, etc. are all various types of doctors, but they cannot do the same things.

as much i as i'd want them to have 100 more features on this site... the real fact is, they are already working on numerous things. if you were following the dev updates every friday, you'd realise that last year they had to redo the entirety of their database. thats no small task and it costed them a lot. you'd also know that the combat tracker is still in alpha and has been for more then a year now. the reason being all the rearrangement there is at the office, many people are gone, they left and others have taken residence. projects and features have moved around a few times and now most of it is in disarray for the time being, until the people on those projects actually catch back up.
its not to mean that many project are done, it only means they need more time for those projects to pick back up where they were left. the reason they did this, based on recent dev updates. is because mostly, people want VTT features and to push for those features they need to rewrite the site to work such features. one of them that has been rolling out recently is the game log. which isn't just a dice log, its gonna be the chat system, its gonna be the dice system, its gonna be event system. its gonna be all of that. and all of that is necessary for the VTT people want. now that the system is up and running, they can finally start working on more features that actually works with it... basically, everything is gonna work with it. they are done redesigning everything from the ground up, their system is up to date, and as such they have now resumed working on the different projects.
so the answer about all this is... give them time, it will happen and faster then you think, but unlike what you think, they don't have infinite resources to work on stuff, and while they have numerous crews, they have tons of stuff to wonder about and not enough man power to work them all.
as for the trello... the problem is that everyone seeems to want a deadline on stuff... since when are company giving away deadlines ? people should stop hoping for a deadline. right now for the time being, your only deadline you will see is what they know will happen by 2021. they don't know when, but its definitely gonna happen in 2021. again if you want to know what those are... check the dev update every friday on twitch and youtube.
for now, most of the crews are working on VTT advancement. that means finishing the dice system, and starting on other link from character sheet to game log. including DM game log.

Yeah I was pretty much specifically talking about you when I said people were making my opinion out to feel useless. No I don't follow their twitch or live streams, I don't think its the best way to share about what projects are currently being worked on. I'm not demanding deadlines, just sharing the features I want to see and wanting to know I am being heard. Personally I could care less about event trackers and VTT features that "everybody" wants, as far as I am concerned it's waisted time and effort but good for the people that want it I guess. Literally any system built for that purpose is going to be 100% better than a system retrofitted to accommodate it. I use beyond for mobile character sheets and simplified progression. Not looking for a response or explanation of all the reasons my opinion is unjustified.
ngl i want VTT too and that is understandable of why its taking so long but homebrew classes have been on the backburner forever, if something is so low on the priority order that every new idea overrides it then its not really planned or a "we want to do it" it turns into someday, maybe when we run out of ideas we'll get around to it, yeah we'd like to do it but ...
I would also like to add to the pile of people waiting for this feature. It is a huge gap in the homebrew system on this site and I would really love to see it made so that we can utilize the website's other great functions with homebrew classes. They are obviously focusing much of their resources on VTT, because it will make them the most money, but it is very disappointing since there are already so many VTTs out there that dndbeyond sheets can be used with thanks to an extension, and that everyone has already taken the time to learn. Homebrew classes have been sorely lacking for as long as the homebrew feature has existed on the site, and just by looking at this thread it is pretty obvious how desired this feature is. This post has remained relevant, and continues to be commented on, over THREE YEARS later. Fingers crossed that we will see some form of option someday soon.
It’s understandable that the community wants this, hell I want it too but from a programming perspective, adding in subclasses is far more complicated than subclasses and even that took a while. Yes, the sooner it is started the sooner it is finished but it’s not quite as simple as - community wants, community gets. The fact this thread has been active for years does highlight the clear demand for homebrew so just the knowledge that it is in the works would be great. Even if it were to come out 2022/2023 people would be happy to wait that long knowing that it is in progress.
If anyone of the DEV team could inform us or try to get it added to the todo list then it would be wonderful!
During all of the lockdowns and stuff last year especially, having a D&D Beyond VTT experience would have been great. Now that we're able to meet in person again, I'm a bit *meh* about VTT, but I can see how it's going to be a great thing - if they do it well. I guess it's that last part which is why it's so difficult, they have to get it right.
As for homebrew classes, it is a bit frustrating not to be able to do them, but I guess we can only wait.
I've been asked to join a campaign set in a non-canon campaign setting based on Norse mythology, and all I really wanted to do was modify the Wizard class to allow me to create a character consistent with the non-canon publication, to be set up to use Runes to cast spells. And although I can create a subclass, unfortunately I don't seem to be able to replace class features such as "Arcane Recovery" with any of the Rune-based features in the publication.
So I'm going to do my best to jury-rig something so I can get a character sheet to work, or I'll go back to old school with pen and paper character sheets.
It looks like there might be an easy work around for the time being: just make a level 1 character with a class of hit dice the same as your home brew class. And then do everything manually from the "view character sheet" function. Theres room in every section for customization and overrides.
You'll need to ignore the level 1 features, but beyond that, you should be able to build as high as you want.

Not the best, but something.
This is pretty much what I did for the Pugilist
or just make a subclass that start at level 1 with sorcerer or warlock or cleric. and just change the features by using the optionnal class feature stuff. just saying people... optionnal class feature is pretty much the same as saying, just make a copy of the class and add features as you want by replacing the old ones.

I mean a lot of companies give release dates.
Video games do it all the time and so does just about every other company.
It's actually out of the norm to NOT give a date.

welcome to the waiting area, well have homebrew classes someday sometime at some point in the far future, but definitely before the end of all time

Naw that's pretty diff brodie
This could also just be you have access to homebrew classes but can only publish if you have a certain review level
Maybe I'm missing it, but if I do this for cleric, for example, I can't get rid of Channel Divinity.
Like, I see that theres a "replacement" option, but that seems to only be able to replace earlier subclass abilities, and not core class abilities.
Have you successfully done this? Do you have an example you can share?
