Basically the title, the last update/Dev Update was a little over 4 months ago and not a single update on anything since. A lot has happened but ever since the old guys left there has been much less updates on what's being worked on. I'm sure there are others like myself that have no problem waiting but we liked those updates from Adam Bradford and getting to ask questions.
I'd really love Dev Updates to make a return. I miss them for few reasons. Not only it was cool to get a peek behind the curtain, but it also kept us informed what's coming, what came out etc. Today changes are just pushed out, and I suddenly notice some things works or looks differently. The new changes aren't announced anywhere on the main page, bug fixes go unnoticed etc.
But honestly atm I don't hold my breath on them returning. Not because "old guys are gone", but because DDB is no longer 3-rd party. I'd like to be proven wrong though.
Agree. Dev Updates helped feeling part of a community, with developers that took the time to engage with the users. Now, it feels like we've moved into the Ethereal plane of D&D Beyond: it looks like it, feels like it, but feels strangely "empty".
The worst part about it to me is that they just... stopped. No announcement of a hiatus or anything like that. Just, they never made another one and never explained why. It's frustrating.

Leaving OGL 1.0(a) untouched and making SRD 5.1 CC-BY-4.0 is a great first step. The next is a promise to do the same for future editions. Here's a discussion thread on that.

Yeah, I also follow Demiplane since I've bought Pathfinder 2e material over on that website and damn, they are PUSHING content out and look who we get updates from over there. Straight to the point, get to ask questions, and clear answers. Damn I miss this guy.
Would love to have Dev Updates again. I'm the one in my group that kept on top of this stuff and helped sell the group on using D&D Beyond in the first place. The Dev updates gave me stuff to look forward to. Now it feels like I'm left in a lurch wondering what is happening. But like all good things when a big company buys it up, it needs to justify its time and cost of production and I highly doubt there was enough views to make it worth producing for WotC.
I also miss the dev updates. I would take just posting the roadmap somewhere, but it was great to hear the thinking that was going into changes and what the devs were excited about.
Now we got a new Dev Update, finally, after over a year.
And it was only about the new Maps feature (which is cool, don't get me wrong). Not a single word about any of the other many unfinished features. Not a single world about the Generic Features System, either. They said many times that so many other things that are in the game rules but are still missing on Beyond are dependent on that. So surely it would be high priority, right? :(
I say it's time for another boycott of WotC, until they have added in all the missing content on the beyond app. like Epic Boons, Dark Gifts, Blessings, Charms, etc.
until they have added in all the missing content on the beyond app. like Epic Boons, Dark Gifts, Blessings, Charms, etc.
Which the devs have said multiple times are locked/gated behind their big Generic Features System overhaul (with them admitting that the original codebase is a pretty big mess since they started out very small and then grew rapidly and kind of just tacked on everything and never had time to really overhaul the system so that it can handle all those features). Because they don't want to just hard-code them in (tacking on even more stuff onto their messy codebase), they want an actual generic system to implement things like this. (Another example would be the variant spell-points system for spellcasters or those spell-replacing features that some subclasses have, like Clockwork Soul.) Which I totally get.
Except that we have been waiting for this Generic Features System for multiple years now, they had promises for it multiple times and then instead we got radio silence or another big delay. Now it's still not out. We haven't even heard anything about it for over a year. (There haven't even been Dev Updates at all for over a year, until this new one now, finally.) Is anyone even still working on it? How many devs are even left working on background system stuff, instead of just adding the new content WOTC push out, or working on their 3D VTT that they for some reason want to make so badly? Maybe almost nobody is, at this point.
At this point it doesn't seem to reasonable to bet on DNDBeyond. Their homebrew support is terrible and lacks a lot, they have all the missing features, communication is very, very low and rare, transparency is at an all-time low from what I can tell. Their character builder is nice and working on your character sheet is pretty good. But the DM tools are very lackluster, and then there's all the missing stuff. Too bad WOTC fight third party stuff so hard. Imagine they would have worked together officially with Foundry VTT (like Paizo are doing for Pathfinder...). Which they never will because they want to make more money by making their own VTT. Ah, the things we could have had by now... but it wasn't to be.
But if everybody stopped spending money on their productsw, or a lot. I have a feeling they would figure out, how to make it work. I think they are just lying because they don't want to spend money on making it work.
I heard that Blizzard had said, they couldn't get something to work in Shadowlands. The game keept losing more and more subscribers. Boom, they could all of a sudden make it work. I think it was something to do with switching covenents (if you even played wow. Or you won't know what that means :) )
I fear that they hard holding most of the GFS until the 2024 core books release and they'll celebrate it with a major overhaul of DDB. I have no inside info, thus is merely my speculation. I only speculate it because I also speculate the 2014 core books will be deemed legacy content.
That being said, I also miss the dev updates. Even once a month would be nice.

Right. So when the new version comes out, they can say, "oh it doesn't matter now". I don't belive they will ever add it
It's also sad because you would have thought that WOTC would care a lot more after they bought DND Beyond. The site literally can't do all of the rules, and customization options for characters, right now. Still, after years. They make this out as the big "official" platform to play D&D on, but they don't even have their own stuff implemented fully. I had been hoping that after acquiring Beyond, they would invest more into it, to get it up to snuff. That they would let them hire more developers. Since Beyond never had the capacity before to both implement all the new content from WOTC and also improve their system and capabilities. But instead, a lot of staff has left or been withdrawn to instead work on their weird 3D VTT (honestly did anyone even ask for this?) I guess. So now Beyond is stagnating even more than before...
I genuinely hope I'm wrong with my speculation, but I fear that I'm not. It would definitely be nice to give my players things like boons and blessings without having to do the roundabout way of giving them a feat. Boons and Blessings are in the DMG. One of the first books.

DDB is great, but it could be better. Here are some things I think could improve DDB

I don't belive they will ever add it in, unless the community unites again and boycotts them, untill they add it in
