Before I begin with my Wishlist for the development, I wanted to make a huge shoutout for the development team! The experience you made possible with the tool DnD Beyond is absolutely breathtaking.
I make RPGs for over 25 years and this just leaves me speechless! It was the perfect concept for a good and solid RPG.
Thank you very much! I absolutely love it to use DnD Beyond!
Please keep this in mind if you (hopefully) read my suggestions to squeeze an additional ounce of satisfaction out of your wonderful offering for the community.
(1) Website - scrolling & sidebar
..(1a) It is nice to hide the navigation and the charactername etc. by scrolling just to the bottom of the page. But I think it is a little bit to far because you also hide the stats and health if you scroll all the way to the bottom. It would be great if this would be adjusted.
…(1b) side-bar should not begin at the beginning of the page, it would be much more practicable if it starts at the top of the current window / scrolling position. To achieve the same availability of the information, it will still be scrollable within the side-bar as already implemented.
…(1c) If a user enables the fixed position for the side bar (on the right or left side) I expected to make it an integral part of the UI, WITHOUT overlapping any other information. I guessed the main contents would then be cantered within the remaining space of the side.
(2) General UI - Advantages / Disadvantages
…(2a) If the symbol for advantage or disadvantage would be behind the area/button it is related to instead of in front of, I guess you would have two advantages: It is „easier“ to read / more like human language (first the bonus for the roll and then the modifiing influence). And the second advantage would be that you would have less breaks in the layout design, which sometimes squeezes parts of words to neutral areas. (For example „Investigation“ will be pushed forward on an iPad mini)
(3) Inventory - Custom Items
…(3a) Weight under 1 lbs should be possible.
…(3b) Cost under 1 Gold should be possible.
…(3c) Export to Homebrew - Button would be wonderful. Due to the fact that Custom Items, same as Equipment Items does not affect Game Stats, an easy way to create and Export would be wonderful. !!! Idea for DEV: This Homebrew data can easily be used to analyse the needs of the community!
…(3d) A textfield to add tags to custom items which will then as well be shown under tags
…(3e) It could be useful to have an option you can activate for custom items if the item should show a Tag with „used/unused“. Best example I currently have is a waterskin: the water can be used, but the waterskin remains in the inventory and can be refilled.
(4) Inventory - Container and weight
…(4a) Weight of the Coins in bags (Beta!) should be added to the weight of contents of the bag, not only to the overall weight.
…(4b) „Move all coins to …“ …another bag would make life so much easier!
…(4c) If the maximum capacity of a container is reached, at least the weight information should turn red.
(5) Inventory - Sorting & Filtering
…(5a) Filter in the Inventory like in the spells section would be great. Just some easy possibilities like for example: Show all Items which have an „use (x/x)“ tag.
…(5b) It should be possible to sort Items in another way then just rarity & alphabetical order. Maybe Weight or Cost is useful too.
…(5c) Alternatively would it be really cool to set the sorting to a manual sorting mechanism with drag & drop function
…(5d) Alternatively alternatively I would already be happy if you release a table of all useful text characters (alphabet and special characters) in the order in which they will be shown in the inventory if I change the names accordingly.
(6) Inventory - UI / Display of stuff
…(6a) The tag „use (x/x)“ would be much more useful to read if you show instead black and white dots (unused/used) which appear either in the tag section or !!! Idea for DEV: under the Item-name (or action-name)!
…(6b) The general availability of an Active/Inactive Symbol/Button for every item (including custom items) would be nice.
…(6c) I think Encumberance and Weight carried could be easier and more usefull visualised. Just the Amount and Status of Encumberance is normally to few for me. !!! Idea for DEV: showing a fine horizontal Line with green and yellow/orange colouration from left to right, ending in a red line to indicate the end of the graph. An circle with the according coloration shows how much weight the character is carrying in relation to the maximum carrying capacity. In addition the scale contains a golden circle to show the player how much of his inventory are coins (I think this would be a lovely detail the player would interest).
…(6d) The „Hide contents“ function for containers and equipment would be a nice Setting for all Container at once. !!! Idea for DEV: Like a separate Filter to be used between „All“ and „Equipment“
(7) Spells - Display of Stuff / UI
…(7a) A option to Remove / Hide the Spells granted by magic items which cannot be used anymore (mostly due to a lack of activations).
…(7b) Spells with the „USE“ function (due to feats or racial features), should not be set to gray after using the 1st free usage - IF you are a spellcaster and have the sufficient spellslots available. It should then be available as „CAST“
…(7c) Spells with the „USE“ function (see above) which can be upcasted for an increased effect should be available like every upcasting spell in every spelllevel after with the „CAST“ function.
…(7d) More options to filter the spells would be wonderful, especial to TOGGLE the filter not only from active to inactive, but from active to „make the opposite appear“ to inactive. Some examples and reasons:
* Show or DON’T show spells with the „Ritual“ tag (sometimes I don’t have 10 minutes for a ritual)
* Show or DON‘T show spells with the „Concentration“ tag (very necessary if you have already a spell with concentration up!)
* Show or DON‘T show spells mit V (and/or S and/or M) components (if I have a „special situation“ like silenced or hands immobilized. I would like to have a quick overview of my remaining options)
* A filter (at least in the filter menue) for the spell schools. Sometimes it is essential to use a special school.
…(7e) Could you please show the little star after the material components (V/S/M*) as well in the tags? It would make things easier to keep in mind if you need to spend something special for a spell!
…(7f) The option to automatically hide all spells which are no longer available due to a lack of spellslots or already used one-time spells.
(8) Spells - Manage
…(8a) I think it would be nice to habe in the list of spells (spellbook/add spell/…) a little spacer between spells of different levels.
…(8b) Optional Spells will be shown with the little plus symbol in a circle. It makes the list a bit of imperfect aligned. Maybe it would be possible to put the symbol on the end of the spellname, together with the symbols of Ritual and Concentration.
(9) Actions - easier usability and visibility
…(9a) Sharpshooter, Great Weaponmaster (and maybe something else?) give additional opportunities to actions/attacks, it would be great if this can easily be set / changed / accessed in this tab. !!! Idea for DEV: an additional line with smaller to-hit and damage buttons, like you did great for versatile weapons (just that it would make generally more sense for me if it is below the original button to roll the dice)
…(9b) I really like the „Attack“ Filter in the Actions section. But I think it would be a little bit more convenient if the settings of the current used filter will be mentioned even if I switch to another section.
(10) Armor Class - Temporary modifier
…(10a) If you use Mage Armor, it would be cool to have an easy option to activate this option for the AC modifier easily. !!! Idea for DEV: If a mage has the „mage armor“ prepared, there could be a little symbol in the corner of the AC visual to activate/deactivate the additional bonus easily. This should of course be reset to „deactivate“ after a long rest
(11) Saving Throws - Advantage/Disadvantage
…(11a) The field for description of advantages or disadvantages is fixed in size and cuts off the (sometimes very necessary) informations. In my option it would be best to expand this field flexibel to the content (I know, every UI designer in your department would like to decaptivate me now). Or at least make a sign / remark to inform there is more than just the visible lines.
(12) Defences & Conditions - List visibility
…(12a) Like my topic for saving throws, I would like to have this fields flexible in size to match the amount of conditions or defences.
(13) Long Rest & Short Rest
…(13a) I mentioned items which doesn’t reset correctly after a long rest (do even any?), it would be great to have in the menues for long and short rests a list of the items which can possibly be reset and a checkbox to do so automatically or roll the corresponding dice accordingly.
…(13b) If the HP doesn’t reset automatically after a long rest, it would be great to have the current HP shown somewhere in the long rest menu to see how many hit dice rolls I still need to spend. Normally the menu overlays the HP visual and I have to guess.
…(13c) The current amount of available hit dice are not easy/transparent to see for me. !!! Idea for DEV: An easier to see format would be great, maybe the amount of hit dice with white/black shapes of the corresponding dices?
(14) Feats
…(14a) I do not understand why some Half-Feats are available separately for each attribute and others do not. I like data to be consistent and this is something that bothers me. Maybe it is possible to make it equal?
(15) Notes (and Description) - Contents
…(15a) It was a great idea to make the „Extra“ page modular with customisable categories. I would absolutely love it if you could do the same as well for the contents of Notes! Then I can make a paragraph for every ally or enemy and don’t have to put everything in one single textfield. !!! Idea for DEV: with an additional field for the headline of each entry, the readability and usability would improve in my opinion.
…(15b) Campaign notes maybe as party notes? !!! Idea for DEV: The entries COULD be shared with other members of the same campaign or be set for all members by the dungeon master. Then the party have an collaborative journal of NPCs! Yay!
…(15c) Detailed description could also made of modular fields. This would help especially characters who like to disguise themselves. They can make a separate modular entry for every alias they have prepared…
…(15d) It would for all the points above about modular entries absolutely fabulous to upload at least one picture. Maybe in a split section which appears on the right side below the „headline“ of the entry.
(16) Description
…(16a) In Characteristics, the textfields for Height, Weight and Age are all 3 with different formats. You can’t put text in Age and Weight, Weight show the unit automatically (and can’t be changed). Is it possible to give the player a bit of freedom for all 3 characteristics if you make the same setting like the height textbox for all three? (If I don’t know my Age, I am not allowed to put a „?“ in. And if I want to use another metric system, it is possible for Height, but not Weight.)
…(16b) An additional Category with „Titles and Honors“ (something like that) would be nice. I personally love to remember the special situations when somebody recognised the achievements of my character.
(17) Charactersheet options
…(17a) The „Share“-Button as well as the white Anvil (go to builder) are both easy to access with the „Manage“-Button. I don’t think there is a big benefit to habe this buttons always available.
…(17b) The Charaktername will be shortened to have the Buttons Manage, Share, Long- & Short Rest as well as the Campaign-Name always accessible. I don’t think that every player has the same priority. Especially the Name of the campaign is very long before shortened with „…“. !!! Idea for DEV: Prioritize the Charactername and if necessary get rid of the words „Share“, „Short Rest“, „Long Rest“ and „Campaign:“ and just keep the related symbols.
(18) Campaign / DM options
…(18a) Most of the options which are available during the character creation in the „Main“ tab would be wonderful if the DM has the possibility to restrict. Idea for DEV: The relevant options will first be presented to the DM during the creation of the campaign. He can then choose to make a decision for the whole campaign or leave it to the player. If he makes the decision, the option is greyed in the „Main“ tab of character creation.
…(18b) Same possibility would be nice to restrict races, classes, backgrounds and of course the generation method for the attributes.
…(18c) Speaking of the generation method for the attributes, it would be nice to have optional some of the favorised methods of the community available. Especially the so called „Bingo Method“. !!! Idea for DEV: If you can roll collaborative for the SAME bingo matrix, which can then be used for the whole group at the same time, my experience is, this is viable to connect the player already during character creation and it is part of a nearly perfect session zero.
…(18d) If I use the manual method for HP, I don’t have a way to track the amount per level. If I forget to roll AND note the HP immediately, it is possible to loose a full dice of possible HP. Or, much more frustrating, if I make a mistake in adding up the amounts. So, it would be nice to have a dedicated field for every level to make a manual entry and keep automatically track of the rolls. !!! Idea for DEV: in this way it would be possible to have a dice symbol close to the entry-field of every empty level-up HP roll.
…(18e) Usually forgotten by the players to consume Rations and Water, it would be nice to give the DM a console to force every player to automatically reduce the amount of available Rations and/or Water by 1. Of course Feedback if anyone lacks the resource.
(19) Fonts and special characters for Text
…(19a) First of all, I would like to have the possibility for an symbol or phrase to make a manual break to the next line in every textfield which makes automatic and uncontrolled switches to the next line.
…(19b) DnD Beyond ignores every space character after the first. This is not so ideal. It decreases the possibility to style / sort / … the things a user wants to customise. Can you please give use the space we need? ;-)
…(19c) A DnD Beyond set of symbols would be wonderful! If the user has the possibility to insert with an easy code-phrase an original DnD Beyond Symbol (like the symbol of an arcane tradition) in a textfield, that would make the experience much more intense). Please note that it is already possible to insert emojis, but wouldn’t it be much more cooler if the user use YOUR set of symbols instead?
(20) Agile Development
…(20a) I would really like to support your service for the community! Please consider this my application as a Scrum Product Owner… :-)
I would be very happy about comments and discussions and hope you all are forgiving about my english, I’m obviously not a native speaker.
