If DNDBeyond follows through with this change the value of the website is gone and I will be ending my sub at that time.
This website could easily retain 1000s of 5e DMs that do not want to move onto 5.5/Next but would continue to pay for access to the purchased content. By removing that content from easy use they are going to lose a lot of subs including mine.
I am two years into my campaign and really didn't want to switch to 2024 stuff. This just feels a little unfair and forcing us to make a change, if we want to use the digital resources at hand.
One of my campaigns is about to finish, and as a group we decided to stick with the 2014 rules for the next one while we wait for the full 2024 core ruleset to be released ... but now, if we want to do that, we will have to go back to using pen-and-paper.
I was most likely going to switch to the 2024 rules, but I wanted to do so on my own terms and at my own pace. Now it seems like WotC is taking that option away from me. It's either convert on their terms or stop using D&D Beyond. :(
TBH I don't post anything on forums usually, but after the OGL problems and now this I'm switching to a better site. this is crazy. I know I don't "own" the content I paid for, but if that was the case make it included in the subscription plan instead of making us buy everything and telling us we can't access a third of it anymore without homebrewing it. I had a master sub before I made this post. not anymore. I'm tired of all this money-grubbing Hasbro stuff. If I can't find a suitable alternative to this, I guess I'm taking my money to Paizo
What's Paizo? Truly curious
Ok, looked it up. I'm looking for a new companion to 5e right now to finish our current campaigns with. Then i will need to retire dnd and go with something less evil. This looks like it will do nice
Kobold Press's Tales of the Valiant should feel a lot like 5e without this nonsense. They're even on Demiplane, which was founded by Adam Bradford and recently picked up by Roll20.
I know that the site is poorly coded, but I don't think a toggle or access would make the site unravel.
You want my solution?
Hasbro Investors(Blackrock, The Vanguard Group, Charles Schwab, etc) should spend money on improving this site to make even more money reasonably from it.
Barring that, just add a toggle for the powergaming & rules lawyering-centric spells people want the 2014 versions of. Not knocking such, just give people the options.
I am a DM and player who has used the site CONSTANTLY since 2020 with a Master tier subscription.
I unsubscribed during the OGL issues and only resubscribed when WotC revised their position.
I have just unsubscribed again. I'll resubscribe when my existing dozens of characters and multiple campaigns can continue to function as they were originally designed, with their current spells intact as Legacy versions.

Agreed. There are already “Legacy” tools in place, the spells need to have it as well. Otherwise, I would like a refund for that 2014 content I cannot use!
They will never hurt you and they have systems built in, even an official dnd 5e system.
Or you can not be parasocial with any company.
"Never hurt you" implies there's a relationship.
I think they mean that because it is software you download and doesn't require them to maintain it, and because the license is granted in perpetuity, it means they cannot do much to "hurt" you. They can literally disappear from the internet and you can still use the software precisely as intended. If they make a new version, you don't have to update. Etc, etc.

I've been a paying DM at the Master tier for years now, my group is in the middle of a four year long campaign. We're not switching to the 2024 ruleset in the middle of the campaign. I was paying for this website out of convenience, which is entirely gone both as a DM and a player. If this website doesn't implement an actually functional toggle for this new ruleset, the second these changes go into effect I am cancelling my subscription and urging everyone in my group to do the same.
Over two years into a campaign and this will upend it. I'll be getting my players to roll their sheets directly in Foundry from now on, and cancelling my master tier sub here. WotC: why did you think this was a good idea?
What on earth made you think this was a good plan that would be well received?
I haven't bought the 2024 content because I'm quite happy with the 2014 content I already paid for. The fact that some people haven't pre-ordered the new books should be a hint that not everyone wants to use it. If someone paid for one thing and explicitly chooses not to buy a second thing, there is no world where disallowing the first thing and insisting on the second won't make people angry and less likely to spend money on your products in the future.
The last thing I want to do is have my players re-learn what all of their spells do halfway through a campaign.
The most absurd part of this is that the correct and reasonable solution of "just mark the old spells and items as legacy" was right there in front of you. You did it with classes, subclasses, backgrounds, feats, etc. Just do it with spells and items too. It is not okay to go on an on about backwards compatibility and how the new stuff can be used alongside old stuff just fine and then turn around and make the system not support using old content.
This really sucks— I just want to access the content I paid for on my character sheet. Let me at least have a choice in the matter without having to jump through homebrew hoops. Like, I wanted to check out 2024 because we were told it would be totally backwards compatible but now I honestly will probably look at different platforms.
Time to send a message. If you don't like the enforced switch, cancel renewal of your paid subscription. That seems to be the only language WOTC understands.
I cancelled my subscription and doubt I'll resubscribe. Have a new group starting using 5e and we'll just use pen and paper. Pretty sour over this, may just haul it all over to PF2. Heard good things.

By less evil you mean the company that treats their employees so bad that they have to start the first union for TTRPG companies?
Or the company that the leadership was being accused of milking the lgbt community? 🙄
There is no such thing as a good company. The ones that pretend are the worst.

Not the best handling of this.
