Using Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide as an example
There is a single price with no options of physical/digital.
Is this purchase digital and physical or only one? Which one as the description states, "Purchasing a digital copy of this book unlocks it for..."
The book says only 5E, nothing about being 2024 core rule compatible. Does this mean that if I only have 2024 rules, I can't use this as it is not compatible?
Disclaimer, I understand even 1E books can be converted, but not knowing the rules, I personally cannot convert if the book is not compatible.
The Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide has been published in both physical and digital formats, but it looks like they're currently only selling the digital version. It came out in 2015, so there's not a whole lot of demand for the physical version anymore.
It was written for the 2014 rules, but everything in there should be largely compatible with the 2024 rules, possibly with a few adjustments. (The 2024 rules are not a full-on new edition and are not really all that different from the 2014 rules.)
Thank you, whole I understand the 2024 is a tweak from the 2014 rules, it looks from reviewing the PHB, like a big tweak if one is just getting into it.
Some books state, "2024 core rule compatible" and some like Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide , don't say that. That is part of my confusion.
How can I tell when a book was written/published? Looking over everything, I could not discern when Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide was actually published.

Unfortunately there isn't really an official definition of what "compatible" means in this context. Anything published prior to the 2024 core books may require some tweaks to use with the new rules. Books from before the 2024 update that now have that "compatible" label on them were written with the 2024 updates in mind during their development process, so they'll probably require less adjustment.

The D&D Beyond Marketplace doesn't list the publication dates anymore, but the information is freely available on Wikipedia or any website that sells the physical copies.
