Hello fellow Washingtonians (and other wonderful D&D community folks)!
There are so many things we've had on our roadmap that we are very excited about, a VTT being one of them! Much of the functionality we've released in the last few months, like the encounter builder and combat tracker, are steps to eventually providing all the tools you would need at your gaming table. While we continue to work on all of these future goals, the focus during the pandemic has been to provide options that can help right away, like the free content and expanding the content sharing limits. We are VERY grateful that people have turned to us during this time to help play D&D, and are continuing to do all the hard work needed to get you the features you're asking for.
Hello fellow Washingtonian. Thank you for the note above. I feel the same way. I am new to DnD and Dm-ing and I found it very confusing that I spent $500+ for digital content and I have to reload all the information into something else in order to have the VTT option for the players.

You got this! If you did just do a big digital purchase on DnD Beyond...make a free account at roll20...look up the Beyond20 plug-in and use everything you have on roll 20...then maybe google about a VTT enhancement suite for roll20 to help make playing on there a lot better!!
so, me being a noob (only been playing a year now, as it was a way from my teen daughter n I to have father daughter time, before shes to old to wanna spend time with dad =P ) We started at an in person place with a table, DM & a bunch of us just having fun. I was recently (like in May 2020) made aware of DnD Beyond. Being old...at 1st I was resistant to the thought. Then, I tried a character I was completely unfamiliar with & thought Id use the Beyond character creator. HOLY SHIT!!! It was AWESOME & I was SOLD! Starting free...it took almost no time to buy digital content (yes, I had the hard copies 1st) & had no regret in my purchase. Now, with the shop being closed...we moved the game to my home (not a problem, we stayed doing what we did at the shop) NOW...that summarizes the "me"
Since my daughter and I started playing last year, we have family (He cousins in her age group & siblings of my own) that are ALSO interested in playing. I have bought & shipped books & dice to give them an idea of DnD. So, they are super eager to play. Now is the issue (for me & my fam) they live in NY, NJ, & FL. I live in AZ. Get the issue? =) So for me, I would LOVE to be able to purchase the mod for say Phandelver & have my family all over the US, log into DnD Beyond, load their character sheet & be able to play as we see on youtube. I get roll 20 is its own thing, but for me...I fell in love with beyond & the way it looks current, not like an atari. Not to mention, Im not the most tech savvy to have multiple platforms running at once...let alone explain that to all & help them get up to speed with the tech.
That all being said (Oh, I did click the link in the 1st page of replies & the link wasnt available) if Beyond had a VTT, I imagine (& maybe my noobness shows my ignorance here) loading on my PC the lost mine, everyone logging in & having the ability to share what I want (maps, pictures) with the group (like we do in person with the figurines) so they can see what/where they are as well. Players having access to all the digital content I have purchased (like it would be in RL passing a book to someone in the middle of a fight to make sure they can do what they are thinking of doing ...which I THINK is part of the master tier sub. LOL) Managing initiative, the fight stats & stuff as an aid for distance playing. IF my imagination is beyond what is in the plans for VTT on Beyond...please DO let me know.
Thats my 2 copper. I will continue using Beyond as I LOVE IT! But will hold off on the Master subscription only till I know I CAN game distance they way I thought it could be. Most likely will get the Hero in the next couple weeks cause I am at 5 characters already =P.
does it mean buying more digital content? or does the content I bought here count for it though?
You can use the content you purchased here like source books. Adventures won't really be much use if you purchased those here for roll20. If you want I could give a little demo over discord.
Ahh, this is so aggravating. It's obvious that it's needed and I would be willing to pay boat loads of money for it. It would also massively increase accessibility for the game during a worldwide pandemic where most of us cannot actually meet up in groups. This situation is not going to change in the next year. So drop everything and work on this because you would help ease the suffering of many during this messed up time.
If D&D beyond had an accessible VTT my group would get to play more often and we would speak to each other more often. We would literally be happier in our lives. When you develop such a service that outclasses everything else, and receive the support of the community in this way, you also develop a responsibility to take care of this community. Part of that is giving us ways of playing the game without literally risking our lives.
Honestly I think at this point they might try and get a partnership with an established VTT (FG or R20) or join with an up and comer (role, Talespire) and just make sure that purchases here work on the table. Man if that could be done that would be great but I bet there are a million lines of red tape with that involved. One can hope anyway.
I've been thinking alot about this, and just in business terms, the amount of $$$ they are leaving on the table with this is staggering.
If they were to incorporate a VTT into Beyond (and a really advanced one, using perhaps the Unreal or Unity engine), think of the revenue possibilities.
They could build out a marketplace for online D & D similar to Steam that could allow for tons of content to be created and sold. The possibilities are endless.....maps, buildings, miniatures, sound packs, etc. etc.
Creating a one-stop solution to a robust VTT would seem to be a simple decision.
Think about it - a DM should be able to create or buy an adventure module, import it into a new online campaign with a single click, and zap out a link or invitation to his players to join.
With the level of tech available as I write this, the number of hoops that you have to jump through to setup a VTT is ridiculous.
The easiest thing in the interim (which I see was also requested over 3 years ago) would be a robust API that would allow all the assets we own here to be incorporated into whatever system(s) we want to use.
Honestly, I'm not sure why that's not done already. Locking an API down to paid subscribers only would be a trivial matter, and could prove another driver of paid adoption.

if its not nailed down...
it's meant to be mine!
Until DnDBeyond gets their own VTT, you can use DnDBeyond with roll20 pretty easily.

Not all of us are young healthy and fit.
