I am an evil and despicable person I custom the $#!% out of my inventory.
For any 'container' that is in another container, I grab "string" and put it in the containing container and change the name of the 'string' to that container.
One of my favorite containers is the 'Tactical Belt' because that is what everyone sees and what weapons are readily accessible. I grab a pouch, and change the name to 'Tactical Belt' another favorite container is WEAR. . And of course, I grab a string and name it tactical belt.. cuz duh.. wearing it.
And for a horse or donkey again grab 'string' and name it 'pack saddle' I can even grab a pouch and name it camp.. or boat or whatever.
Occasionally my PC's garb changes drastically so may have several 'Wear; *' renamed pouches.
This is a great work-around for sure! It's something that I would be willing to do, but getting my players to take that extra step is too much for some of them. I DM a group of newer players, so just getting them to work with the features of the character sheet as intended is challenging enough. Customizations are a bit beyond their reach at the moment, but when they get there, I'll definitely share this concept with them! Like I said to someone else before, this is more of a suggestion for improvement to WOTC, not something that hinders the game. It just seems to me like it would be an easy fix for a programmer.

Mount Carrying Capacity - Shows the mount carrying the left saddlebag, which is a customized "string" as Toddy_Shelfungus suggested. I renamed it from "string" to "Saddlebag, Left", then added the weight to match what the actual "saddlebag, left" container is carrying (8 lbs)
Saddlebag, Left- Shows the items and carried weight of the left saddlebag
It's an extra step but it's at least a more workable work-around. I'll just have to go in and update the saddlebag on the mount manually to match the weight carried by the saddlebag container during/after each game session. Thanks for the suggestion Toddy_Shelfungus! Genius!
I'm wondering if anyone has revisited this recently. It looks like they added a feature to attach a saddlebag to your animal, but when I try to do it, it just never attaches. The function is there (on my character sheet under "inventory" --> "warhorse," it says "add items to your warhorse" & "saddlebag" comes up to the right when searched), but when I try to do it, it just gives me more saddlebags that aren't attached to my horse. Has anyone been able to successfully add a saddlebag to an animal this way? Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

You cannot attach a container to another container or to anything in Extras. You can add it then customise it to detail it is "on warhorse" or such. You will note that next to the container name is a checkbox - if you leave this unchecked the weight of any items added will not apply to your character.
I made a video about containers that might possibly help.

Basically, your mount is a type of "container". They've done that so that you can add a saddle, bit & bridle, mount armor, etc. to that mount. You can only add items to a "container". They do not allow a container to be added to a container (e.g. saddlebag to a mount). I think the intention was to prevent actions like adding pouches inside pouches. If they did, you could put an infinite amount of pouches inside a single pouch, which is ridiculous.
The unintended consequence of disallowing this is you can't put a saddlebag on a mount. I'm not a programmer, but I think they could come up with a way to classify mounts differently than an inanimate container, since it's only logical that you should be able to put a saddlebag on a mount. My theory is that this was an oversight in design, an unwillingness to put mounts into their own category that would be able to carry containers, or they realize after the fact the problem this creates but are unwilling to correct that problem because of a business decision (e.g. the cost of hours of programming vs. the return on investment).
I would suggest submitting feedback to them. Maybe eventually one day they will listen, or at least cogently explain why they can not make the exception. In the meantime, I just keep using the workaround mentioned earlier in this thread.
Do you know, if I leave it unchecked, if Avrae will prevent me from using it? My group is dispersed a bit throughout NJ & NY, so we play on Discord. I can just mess around on Discord to find the answer, but I figured if you know that'll be faster.

That makes sense. Thank you.
