"I know that there is no feisable way for Wizards to know what books we've purchased."
As one user pointed out - Twitch, who owns these guys, are owned by.... (Drum roll) AMAZON! :)
Using your Amazon account, for a log-in, could also be used to verify Wizards D$D purchases! More useful than a twitch account, most won't have, or use - if they are pen and paper peeps! ;)

So what if I just picked up three books at Barnes & Nobles? Or maybe a LCS?
I highly doubt there will be a granting of content based on physical purchases, it makes no business sense and violates another businesses model.

There was a post out there about the team not wanting people to have to repurchase content. The idea right now (as you can find on the FAQ) is that all of your access is based off being subscribed not off repurchasing by the book.
They also noted that there should be ways to only subscribe to the content you actually need and not pay for the rest.

From that FAQ I got the impression that you would only have to pay for the content you wanted to access. In their example if you made a fighter you'd get access to the fighter content for a price, well what happens when I want to change to a wizard? Now I buy another piece of content... I do this for each class? So instead of a simply monthly fee for access to all Class content I will buy the PHB piece by piece? That makes even less sense. I also highly doubt they will make a subscription for each 1000 pieces of different content access possible... talk about nightmare.
Always scary when you hear the words "Well we won't force you to rebuy anything" Because it is usually followed by. "But if you want to access it here, you will need to rebuy it"

They did state that we will be able to add homebrew content. I'm willing to bet they mean "If you don't want to buy it again, you can enter in the information yourself."
I think it is scary to think that some DM's would be willing to pay (15) more than a monthly Netflix account to be able to use a hyperlinked SRD with a Forum access and Character sheet storage. Yes, it costs money to store stuff but how about actually shooting for a more reasonable target than 15 a month or this product will die on the vine. Much as many of my fellow bloggers and vloggers and gamers, in general, have all vocally said.
I think you are greatly underestimating what you should be getting for 180 bucks a YEAR if you embrace the 4E model. I would boldly say that one of the reasons the 4E model was even tenable was the inclusion of the Dungeon and Dragon E-mags, as well as the higher levels of 4E, were so front end level and ability bulky that a character creator was a godsend.
5E was designed to avoid much of that. Your character creator is going to be a much lighter beast.
Lastly If I have Amazon Prime wich includes a Twitch sub already then am I not already paying for this?
I really wish that they had had the forthought to print a unique ID in each book that could be linked to an online account thereby giving WotC a way of verifying purchase, and also having a book tied to a single account. This would also promote people buying books new instead of used since the code would not be transferable.
I really wish this was part of their rollout strategy from the beginning, especially since, I think at this point in the 21st century, you expect the flagship rpg to have digital tools as part of a book purchase.
Re-buying content will never feel good and I suspect could be the single biggest factor that determines the success of DNDBeyond.
Yes, that would be fantastic. I like owning the physical versions of products and literally own thousands of D&D books. As a DM I like to incorporate a lot of reference material in to my campaigns so a way to access content that I have already paid for is almost a requirement.

Your looking at this as it is not, not what it intends to be down the road. Certainly it isn't worth $15 a month in it's current state but your ignoring the planned Phases coming and the mention of other items to be placed in future phases as development is determined.
For my $15 I better get full 5E content access, Character sheet/management, DM storage for notes, a campaign assistance module, and maybe even a remote party function.
If you look at other tools that offer no assistance and require lots of manual inputs (legal use) your coughing up for the manuals and the software, easily in the hundreds of dollars.
I am most defiantly not looking at it in an "As" current status. I am looking at the whole picture I think you might be speculating as well. Yes, Phase 2 will give us Character Sheet/Management. Unlimited? Some? A Few? I imagine that it will or should be unlimited. (but that's just a guess much like you are making) Phase 3 will give us Homebrew and Campaign Managment. Currently, you nor I have any idea what that means yet. Show me where we have been told we can expect remote party functions, module assistance and such. This is all speculation.
My statements are grounded in the history of what the company has done in the past. 4E was 15 a month and provided Character storage/Monster creation and two E-mags. Was updated haphazardly and the compendium SRD was often broken at best. Roll 20 and FG make you buy the book all over again at a slight discount and leave it with no subscription.
What we will likely see is a Tier set up.. Free for all current Free content. As well as a Sub cost for the rest or Purchase again in the R20 FG fashion.
Just dropping an arbitrary 15 dollars because that is what some of us (including myself ) paid for content in the past sets the bar low. Instead, we should be saying this is what I expect should be free. Now tell us (curse) what you feel might be something you would want us to pay for.. and give feedback to these things. The idea is to make a product that not only works but is something that will be affordable and accessible to everyone with maximum value.
Essentially what I am getting as is let's see the finished product before we start talking about how much were willing to pay for it. We have had 4 attempts at digital products by WOTC and their developers since 3.0. None ever delivered on their full promised value. But we paid full monthly price fo 4E for a long time before they just shut those portions down. Color me hopeful yet cautious.
It would be amazing if they were willing to send mini a month for those willing to subscribe at a higher rate, I know I would jump at that opportunity!
My personal experience with wizards is there Customer service team is staffed by saints. They'll replace any book in bad shape due to wear and tear or whatever more or less no questions asked. They value their repeat customers very highly. If that business model applies I doubt that they'll be super harsh on monetization of DDB content especially if you've purchased hard covers in the past. Not that I'd really know though.
The 4e Digital Tools pulled off a subscription model, especially because it offered a lot of things that you couldn't get with the physical books (such as a very robust search engine, and design tools for things like encounters and monsters, etc).
That is what we have on the table now. I would pay for that, I think. Especially if it came with something like Dragon Magazine used to for the 4e Digital Tools. $15 is asking a lot, but honestly... it could be worthwhile if they can deliver.
I wonder if WotC shared the 4e DnD Insider source code with Curse. Maybe there is a possiblity for them to directly port some of the tools... At least give them a leg up on making DnD Beyond.
I doubt that Wizards will link your purchases on Amazon with DDB. It would only encourage people to buy their books exclusively on Amazon and it would hurt small game shops in your local towns which would cause a divide between them and Wizards. Just one mans opinion.

Could they use the QR code on the back of every book?
sadly the UPS is the same across all copies of the book.
QR codes are just obfuscated website addresses, at least the ones on the books are. They are identical to each book.

Would be great if they could tie this to Fantasy Grounds or other Official D&D content we re-bought already.
I suspect it will be a 10 a month plan here, with a 199 Lifetime.
