The person saying its a massive commitment isn't really being fair. Most players can buy the tools they need for $10 to $15 to play a single game. A dungeon master maybe $25.
The complaints always assume the new player is buying whole books but there is no need to that. Just buy your background, subrace and subclass.
this isn’t helpful at all^ and also totally wrong it would cost the player at least $30 to do that, the dm much more.

IIRC Any background, race, subclass etc is $2.00 if bought individually. That $2.00 is taken off the total cost of the book if you decided to purchase it in full later. A player should not need to spend $30 to get the class, subclass, background and race they want to play. Even if you were to buy the PHB it's unlikely every player would spend $30 if they are friends.
IF you were to spend that much it would be better to pool the money buy the books (or individual pieces) you want and a sub to share those books/individual items for a month ($5.99 a month). You would get far more content that all of you can use that way.
If you decide you like it subs are cheaper semi-annually or annually although I can understand someone not having the funds for that in one go.

And that's it. Possibly less since most races are free and those using subraces have one free. There's a background free, and one subclass per class free. For the DM the basic rules has a lot of tools, rules, magic items and monsters to all use. There are free adventures out there on DMs Guild and other places or you can run a homebrew game.
Want extra stuff at no cost? Make it up. You can homebrew a lot of things and it's not difficult to make things.
The DMG offers extra rules and lore about the planes, which is very helpful but not actually necessary. If the DM wants them, they could shell for the $30 book with the bells and whistles that add to the sheet and stuff. Or just $20 for the compendium only version if all they want is the book contents to read.
Going to stress again, there are homebrew tools you can use to recreate most things, if you have the source elsewhere like a physical book, entirely and 100% free. And your homebrew creations are shared with everyone in the campaign - no cost, no subscriptions, nothing extra needed.
If you're going to "correct" people, especially in a conversation that died half-a-year ago, you could at least be accurate.
It's entirely possible to run a campaign from 1st to 20th level without spending a single cent/penny. Literally the reason why the Basic Rules are free. So you could do that. And if you liked the game wanting to play more, extra are available at cost.

Incorrect.
Player: Basic Rules (Free) + Race ($1.99) + Background ($1.99) + Class (Free) + Subclass ($1.99) = $5.97
DM: Basic Rules (Free).
