Hmm... I seem to remember a kick-starter that had already unlocked many features for map-making.
It was called Dungeon Alchemist (maybe? it had alchemist in the name).
You could click and drag to determine the size of your room or map, and it would fill in the details for you (even had dynamic lighting if you wanted it).
Some really cool features for some really quick maps. And for those who like to personalize their maps, you could remove or add items to the maps.
(Plus you can import them to roll20 and other sites. I'm not artistically inclined so this is a godsend for me.)

"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
https://www.owlbear.rodeo/ is pretty great if your looking for a free, simple VTT to use with your maps. It has a few very basic maps and tokens but you can upload maps and tokens to it.

I am looking for a free or cheap map generator that will allow me to create maps and maybe put on character tokens. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Inkarnate's free assets can make a decent number of nice-looking maps.
