To get back on topic I remember somewhere that the designers stating that the intention of the spells known was to represent tricks or knacks that the ranger developed, I can only guess that choice was partially based on limited resources/lack of desiree for development of a different sub system. That reason along with the legacy of spellcasting in the class history/fantasy.
That being said the choice feels kind of lazy difference for the sake of difference, especially as prepared spell casting became less Vancian (along with the numerous bonus spells for domain/oath and land spells) and the spells known casting system lost one of it's major design parts... the ability to cast more spells in a day.
It does seem to me that the ranger was not development nearly as well as other classes and it make me curious what a ranger designed post players handbook release or even post tasha's would have looked like.

Yes to all of this. If you look at the final playtest packet and then the first release of the handbook we can see how little they had their crap together regarding the ranger class.
