Every now and again I like to take my party out of the serious, deep, multi layered save the world sandbox campaign and throw something fun and different at them. There was that time they found a strange green tube which took them into an underground fungus land where a tortle king had kidnapped the fungus princess and the party had to fight his tortle army to free her.
Or the giant king they where magically shrunk down to move through to fight and clear a disease in his system, moving through his body as tiny microbes fighting off white blood cells, surviving the stomach etc.
But my fav has to be that time I Tpkd my party on purpose.
The players had been asking for a switch of system for a while, just a short one shot (which generally means 4-5 sessions) of something. I took it on board and told them once the story reached a beat it would happen.
So party are investigating a castle, claims that something in it is causing a nearby villiage to suffer bouts of paranoia. The previous session they had reached the castle entrance which was marked with a blue stripe, and stepped into the closed off courtyard. start of session trap is sprung, over the next 40 mins I kill off every player one at a time. As each dies I ask him to leave the room where a friend of mine hands them an envelope to open read and follow the instructions. Finally the last player dies, very very pissed off at me (wondering how many counterspell a gargoyle can have, answer in this situation as many as I want). At this point the other players come back in and he is given his envelope looking very confused when our friend joins us and is then asked to complete a simulation appraisal form for friend computer.
What then followed was the best game of paranoia I have ever had on either side of the table, Ended up going 8 sessions we where having so much fun. The opening was an explanation that they where being activated as trouble shooters from their drug induced coma playing an old earth game in VR.
After finishing paranoia I reset, turned out when they walked up to the castle they knocked spores of a plant linked to the fey, which then made them fall unconscious and imagine they died and then woke up in the future. No TPK no equipment used up. We just carried on. Watching them spend 3 hours before they would enter the castle was great, especially when they found the whole thing was empty it was the flowers causing all the paranoia to happen :).
So what crazy places have your adventures gone either as a planned beak, or because the players dragged it there :).
