I'm relatively new to the DnD world and am playing in a one-shot where we are all beastmaster Rangers. I am playing a Yuan-ti PureBlood and wanted to pick a snake/serpent creature as her companion because well.. snake people. We are allowed to choose a creature with a CR up to 2 and I was considering a flying snake. The DM for this one-shot tossed out a Coautl which has a CR of 4 and he said he'd nerf it down to be fair so the current CR rating of the creature isn't too important as long as a nerfed version would work or make sense. I'm not sure of the details of the one-shot exactly but just want something fun and can hold it's own (Since I also don't know what everyone else is picking as their creature)
The flying snake is actually a surprisingly potent Beastmaster companion, for traditional Beastmasters. Its flyby ability means it can jump out of your sleeve, bit someone for a not-terrible amount of poison damage, then dart back into cover on your person. You can get some really cool visuals with a loose-sleeved beastmaster flicking what looks like unarmed strikes at their enemies, except every time they do a snake flies out and bites the target instead. It's not phenomenal damage, but it's cool and relatively safe for the critter, which is the typical problem with Beastmasers - their critters die at the drop of a hat.
The flying snake is absolutely perfect for this. I love the visuals of the snake-fu Rei.
Since you are allowed up to CR 2 beasties, I would talk to your DM about a scaled up version of the winged danger noodle. Keep the tiny size because that's one of its best features. I even like the idea of keeping the bite at 1 piercing damage for flavor. Just scale up the poison and hp to make one hateful snake.
On the other end of the spectrum the Giant Constrictor Snake is CR 2 out of the box. It's huge size is quite likely to get in the way on more than one occasion though.
Just to try and get some clarification from others much more knowledgeable than myself. What is the best way to identify what creatures are snakes/serpents and would fall under the Yuan-Ti's ability to speak to said creatures? Is there a better way to search for this?
I personally like the idea of a small companion that is always able to be close to the character themselves. I like the idea of something that can be playful and also an irritant to the other party members. And yes, the flyby offers a great form of protection and its speed seems to be top tier for what the creature is.
I was considering asking the DM to allow more than one companion if I chose the flying snake, like allowing me to have 2, to even out the fact that the flying snake is a CR 1/8 but it also has a poison bite that has no saving throw to prevent the poison which, from what I read, seems like it's a crazy thing in itself.
