The below image I want to use as near exact inspiration for my next character...what class or multiclass do you think this would be for a level 12 character? How would you stat them out?
This could pretty much be whatever class you want that fits in your settings fiction. A melee focused character that uses both action and bonus action would either be using two weapon fighting or the Polearm Master feat.
The artillerist turrent is ba. Im going to see if fighter artillerist might work. Also going to look at what spells are ba that I could use after hitting.
What would you be hoping to do with a fighter/artificer multiclass?
Keep in mind that your eldritch cannon as an artillerist's hp scales only with artificer levels, so it's not going to have much HP if you're splitting your levels much. As an artillerist/fighter I believe you're going to be a bit MAD, as you need good INT for the cannon, but good STR for your own attacks. (Or DEX, but with that big ass hammer I'm assuming you'd go STR fighter.) Plus enough con to take some hits. Doable but something to keep in mind.
I'd say a Barbarian and Gunslinger Fighter based on the gear's functionality. I'm assuming that's a firearm in the holster and not a giant banana. The big hammer leans toward Barbarian and someone with maybe great weapon master feat. There's some "tech" on the character but that can be skinned as potions, maybe that thing on the arm is one of those energy bucklers, which could be used as unarmored defense but shouldn't be with the two handed hammer. Really the armor can be largely discarded as cosmetic trenchcoater look.
Might impose a perception penalty on that hat, it's just obnoxious. Kidding.
Yeah definitely changing the hat. The original character concept had peter Parker vibes (young, relaxed). Obviously this picture loses some of that but im thinking he might wear a cap instead.
As to the artificer idea its just a thought. and as warforged have that tech vibe along with his gear it might have been cool. Clearly he is some sort of fighter and I liked the idea of attacking with the hammer (one with a knock prone or sweep effect would be cool) and then flame throwing as a secondary effect.
Unfortunately gunslinger won't be an option. So the giant banana is unlikely to be on the final character.

Battlemaster fighter has maneuvers for knocking enemies prone and a sweeping attack. Trip Attack forces the target you hit to make a STR saving throw or be knocked prone, sweeping attack allows you to damage a second creature with the attack if it's within 5 feet of the original target. Those could play well into swinging a big hammer around. These are limited use, BUT you get these back on a short rest which is nice.
If you eventually take the Crusher feat, you can once on your turn move a creature you hit with bludgeoning damage 5 feet as well, smacking them around a bit.

Edit: just noticed the designer indicates artificer.
Im looking for a melee focussed character that makes regular use of multiactions AND bonus actions each turn.
