One problem I did have with the adventure is that some parts depend on the characters having Rivals, but there are no in game reasons to ever intentionally have a Rivalry with an NPC. Could be a plot hole there.
My only complaint about this book is the monster stat blocks. We have mages where 90% of their power is in there abilities, where they only have a hand full of low level spells and maybe 1 mid level utility spell. It makes tools that should traditionally be strong against caster type creatures useless. Counter spell, globe of invulnerability, mage slayer, and spell resistance are borderline useless in a book about mages! I'm not excited about this direction that Wizards is taking stat blocks.
I can homebrew these spells and abilities to work with magical affects, but it's annoying and I'd rather have something I pay for be functional with out me having to tweak it too much.
Listen, I get it, the owlin was probably overpowered. But why did they need to nerf it into oblivion? I was just in the character builder and it's so boring? It's literally just a slower Aaracockra with stealth and darkvision. Where's all this fey magic we saw in the UA? It's just garbage combined with the fact it doesn't get standard racial ASI's. Has no personality at all.
Imma be honest, this purchase was just for the DDB pre-order rewards in the end. This book is just disappointing so far.
Owlin does get standard racial ASI's. Look under creating your own character and it will state "If you create an owlin character, follow these additional rules during character creation." Then goes on to say you can put +2 and +1 or 3 +1's to your scores. For whatever reason they decided to print that under character creation and not the Owlin race.

It does not whatsoever get standard ASI's. If it did it would say something like "Your Dexterity increases by 1 and your Wisdom increases by 2". That is a standard ASI.

That depends on how you define standard. Yes, the majority of races still use specific ASI. That said, all of the released races' ASIs since Tasha's have been as scooper93 stated, and will most likely continue to be that way in future releases, hence the new standard.

I mean... no one purposefully tries to make enemies. Most likely, a character would get a Rival by doing better than them in a competition, accidentally offending them, or something similar. Or maybe the Rival is just a jerk.

Hmm. That makes sense!
This was my only problem with the NPC section. The first thing I did in prep for my upcoming Strixhaven campaign was add some new evil/jerk NPC's, since all the ones in the book are super friendly and good. I made up a few out of whole cloth, and I borrowed some from Dweomercore in DotMM, since I figure they're already evil students at a magic school.

Sure buddy.
I guess since it bothers you so much, I'll make it more understandable for everyone. ASI's that are standard for the race. The customized origin is supposed to be optional, and with normal races the ASI's are the usual for their adventurers. That's what I mean. They don't have static racial ASI's. Saying they do, like you guys have, is just straight up incorrect.

You are going to be disappointed in the coming months/years. NONE of the races going forward are going to have your version of standard.

Honestly man, you wanted to argue semantics, but the argument you tried to assert as true was at best a half-truth, and at worst incorrect. That's why I responded. There's no need to get testy about it.

I mean, that makes perfect sense to me.

I think I've already made enough trouble in this thread, but I'll try to explain myself.
So you started out by saying nobody tries to make enemies, and listed the circumstances that a rivalry may form naturally from outside causes. Then you say that a jerk would seek out rivals. So my issue was that you state nobody seeks rivals, but then provide an example of somebody who would.
In hindsight, I think you meant that nobody seeks out enemies unless they're jerks, but because the statement was a little disjointed it read differently to me. It was a minor nitpick that I shouldn't have made, but in the moment I was impulsive. My bad!

She/Her Player and Dungeon Master
Which I totally agree with.
Same. I much prefer getting all the racial flavour with none of the hangups about which job they're effective at.
