It's usually considered one of the better traditions, and it's quite clearly a front line type.
Agreed. The stackable bonus to AC and concentration checks based on the main stat plus features to mitigate damage received. These features are to specifically compensate for the wizard's otherwise squishy nature so that it can fight on the front line, especially factoring the defensive spells wizards possess (which are among the best in the game with only one or two exceptions).
And if your DM doesn't restrict race and permits Dragonmarked races, you could go Mark of Healing and get a bunch of healing spells now available as wizard spells for you to choose.
