Hey Guys! How’re you? I hope everything is well! :)
So our DM made a Champaign set in Modern day world with magic and all the stuff and all Races like elve, orc, dwarf etc live together. I’m making an ancient spartan warrior who died during a war but Hades decided to make him his warrior/assassin, granting him magical and / stealthy abilities. (But he doesn’t worship him or anything, all my character wanted was to die, but Hades had another use for him, to punish those who cheated death) So he’s 2,400 years old (the dm is okay with it, he even helped me make his backstory) He’s a variant human
Anyway I’m kinda stuck of which class and subclass should I choose and what weapons he would use. {I’m not a fan of multiclassing, sorry :(}
For classes I thought:
Barbarian: Ancestral Guardian
Fighter: Echo Knight
Fighter: Eldritch Knight
Ranger: Gloom Stalker
Rogue: Arcane Trickster
Rogue: Assassin
{if you have another class or subclass in mind please tell me :))
As for weapons I don’t know… he lived in ancient times where all he used was spear and shield but times flies so he would change weapons (in the Champaign there is guns and stuff) so can you help me with that too please :) thank you (also this is my first time posting here :x)
Ultimately, your class option is something I recommend you decide on your own - you are the one who has to play it, and any of the options you listed could be viable for this the character as described.
I know that is not exactly what you were looking for, but it’s probably the best answer one can give.
However, that said, I would likely lean toward Gloom Stalker of those - it’s a powerful class, has options for invisibility (I presume you are tying in the Cap of Invisibility to your backstory), and has a distinctly chthonic feel the others lack. It’s is not exactly “Spartan” in the traditional sense - but none of your class options are, so I do not expect that will be a problem.
The most “Spartan” of classes would be Oath of Glory paladin, which is directly inspired by the aristeia of Greek literature. However, that does not really play into the whole steal thing you are going for.
For weapons, short sword (xiphos), spear, and shield are going to be the most flavourful.
I also would be remiss as a classicist if I did not point out that that idea of cheating death, while present in Greek mythology, is sort of looked upon as something of an utter impossibility. Take a look at the most famous attempt to cheat death - Achilles throwing a massive temper tantrum and getting his friend/arguably lover killed because he wants to avoid his fate. His attempt to cast off his fate by not engaging fails horrifically.
Other than folks trying to defy fate and in so doing sealing their fate (and other than the apotheosis of mortals like Asclepius), the only real time we see someone trying to defy the concept of death is Orpheus attempting to return Eurydice from Hades. And Hades is perfectly chill with that - he does everything he can to let Orpheus return, so long as Orpheus follows one simple rule… and Orpheus ends up blowing it - can’t really blame Hades for that one!
Anyway, all told, I’m not sure the narrative makes much sense with Hades as the facilitator from a classicism standpoint - I might recommend keeping everything the same, but perhaps choosing Alecto as your patron deity. Or even Zeus - that guy was much more into punishing mortals for breaking his rules than his elder brother.
Zealot Barbarian and Warlock (Hexblade, Fiend, or Undead) spring to mind as immediate options.
Second nom for Zealot barbarian. This ability fits the backstory too well:
Warrior of the Gods
At 3rd level, your soul is marked for endless battle. If a spell, such as raise dead, has the sole effect of restoring you to life (but not undeath), the caster doesn’t need material components to cast the spell on you.

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
If you go shield and spear, which as a spartan seems really thematic, you should look at pole arm master for your vhuman feat.
And the barbarian ideas fit well, since you'll want to be unarmored for that. Spear, shield and unarmored -- you'll look like you came straight out of "300." (Which, as far as I know, was 100 percent historically accurate down to every detail.)
Caerwyn_Glyndwr” Thank you for your time :) i like what you wrote a lot!!
I was confused about The classes because he lived and worked for Hades for centuries, he’s bound to change his fighting style or Stuff
I don’t know if I’m gonna make sense but Hades making my character his warrior was not for punishment but he wanted a warrior to punish those who cheated death (sorry if that didn’t make sense, English is not my first language)
(And sorry if I didn’t write it in the post or wasn’t clear about it) The reason I chose Hades because Zeus was the one who punished my character and sent him to Hades and Hades made him his warrior. but you’re right Zeus does make sense, consider he have zero chills.
Thank you so much for your time :) I like what you wrote!! I never watched 300 but I heard it was a good movie I’ll definitely watch it to learn stuff.

thank you again :)
Just a note on DDB - hit "Quote" not "Reply" when you respond to someone. The "Reply" function is rubbish and doesn't tell us who you're talking to - which can get confusing. If you hit "Quote" instead, everyone can see exactly who and what you are responding to. I know it makes sense to hit "Reply", and I hope they fix it one day so that it automatically quotes them as well or just get rid of the button.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

Then, in case it doesn’t come across in translation. I was joking, and I’m pretty sure 300 was not historically accurate.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
