I mean, I've always used Shifters as the Gateway Furry/Anthromorphic Blank Slate race for that kind of thing.
Shifters in Lore have mostly Human features with a beastial cast. In your campaign, they could be straight up anthromorphic, and with the rework to the Shifter race, they're actually fun and competitive with other Player Races now.
Is there currently any race in source materials or UA for a canine humanoid other than Gnolls? Like a Wolf or dog version of a Tabaxi. I'd rather use something with a bit more grounding in the world lore of Forgotten Realms than resorting to a Homebrew right out of the gate.
So many players not knowing the answer to this question is a highlight of 5e's lack of lore being a problem.
These guys were actually a bit popular back in the day. They began as a bit of a primitive tribal society, but then expanded pretty quickly into a fully-fledged medieval civilization.
For a Wolf you can look at the Leonin from Mythic Odysseys of Theros could work just re-flavor to Wolf. Swap "Roar" to "Howl". Leonin are Lions but can mechanically swap to Wolves pretty easy
Additionally, you can swap "Claws" to "Bite" and it will serve the same purpose.
There is not Dogfolk race. There's Catfolk, Lizardfolk, Birdfolk, Turtlefolk... no Dogfolk. Not in DND, not in Elderscrollls... sorry but Man's Best Friends seams to just get shafted in almost all Fantasy worlds. It's a little more than annoying at this point.

Reflavor Leonin to Wolfman, and you got it!
