So I've long understood that to get to the astral sea one usually has to Astral Project which means that you are connected to your physical form via a silver thread. Does this mean then that if you visit other outer planes through the astral sea you will still have the thread? Will you have it if you attempt to use a spelljammer helm? If you eave the astral sea via the Ethereal plane and return to the PMP what happens?
In contrast, does this mean that it would be easier to get to the Astral Plane via a portal or through the Ethereal Plane to bypass the need for the thread and the inherent danger it brings?
Oh you think that's confusing? Check this S*** out.
Per spelljammer, every setting exists in it's own wild space system that is seperated from the others by the astral sea which would imply that the prime material plane is actually a series of demi-planes contained within the greater astral plane leading into serious questions about what the hell the cosmology even looks like at this point.
I try to think of them as islands of wild space but all part of the same ”land”. So the material plane is one large plane, flooded with the astral sea and overlapping in areas of wildspace, like continents.
but it does bring up all kinds of questions, like can one teleport between wildspace systems or just worlds in the same wildspace? If you can teleport between systems, what does dream of the blue veil do? Are parallel realities their own wildspace or something else?
I’d also like clarification as to what happens to the air envelope of a spelljamming vessel or creature when it enters the astral sea. Yes they dont breathe in astral, but when they exit is it the same as when they entered?
To OP. I believe if you physically travel to the Astral you don’t have a Silver cord. Its a special case of Astral Projection, which is confusing enough when considering the information in the DMG

“It's still magic even if you know how it's done.”

It's almost like the design team simultaneously thought it was a good idea to ditch the spheres and the phlogistron while having no earthly idea what the hell they were doing with regards to clearly established planes creating a bizarre and confusing mess.

The Astral Adventurer's Guide does mention that you can use teleport or similar magic (like teleportation circle, I'm guessing) to teleport within a Wildspace system.
But to travel between systems, you need to cross the Astral Sea. And since you can use astral projection to do that, maybe that spell lets you travel between systems too? It would certainly give it an interesting niche that makes it more useful as a 9th level spell.

I know! It's been bothering me so much too!
