Ya, I agree. Experimenting with friends is one of the better ways to do it. It may have already, but I feel like this is one of those this that could be expanded more.
What do you mean by expanded more? Do you mean you would like some text in a book describing how to run games using different techniques? Or something else?
I have been wondering, and have wanted to try. From my limited experience having played D&D 5e, and more from what I have watched on Twitch and Youtube. The players go on and adventure, but, can it be done were the players stay in a city or town for example, and the "adventure" takes place there? For example, Star Trek: Deep Space 9, compared to the other Star Treks?

I really like D&D, especially Ravenloft, Exandria and the Upside Down from Stranger Things. My pronouns are she/they (genderfae).

That, or something that could help make that concept seem less obscure (like it does to me).
There are generic books on GMing but knowing what is fun and what is not, how long something will be fun as well as how terrible things in small doses can be fun. That is like a master class in GMing, story writing and how to identify your groups play dynamics all in one.
The best way is to just try stuff out and see what your group likes. Or better yet ask them what they like and provide some ideas and have them rate them. Also as it is your own group and you are there to have fun it is not a big deal if it goes really poorly. Just be prepared if it does go poorly and not to take it personally.
As a side note some pro authors do not share their secrets as they do not want people copying their style and thus diluting their product as it is their way to make $$$.
Good Luck,
Also there is no magic I have found to make things very very easy, you need to put time in the design phase, plan out multiple story ideas (in case one or more does not pan out or the players simply do not want to do that) and then ask yourself if that will be fun. Try and think of how others will feel about the adventure and not just what you love.
