Hi all! I run D&D club at my high school and was recently asked if we had any type of competitions. The only competition thing we have ever done in the club is a battle royal once they hit 14th level (it was at the end of the year). Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions? Thanks 🙏🏻

Something I like to do is like a gladiator arena, that isn't necessarily PvP, but more of who can get the most kills. I like to throw hordes of lower-level monsters at them, like maybe orc variants, with a boss every few rounds like an ogre chain brute, or whatever suits your level. You could also use a couple of monstrosity type monsters, like chimeras or basilisks, and have a total damage competition.

Tomb of Horrors, a 1e module recreated in 5e as part of Tales from the Yawning Portal, was initially designed as a tournament meat grinder. Each trap, puzzle, and encounter was designed to cause a potential total party wipe. Different parties would enter the dungeon and see how far they could survive, with the party who got the furthest being the winner of the competition.

There are several old 1e tournament modules that depend on party scores. The old slavers series A1 to A4 is designed with this in mind and you can find conversion tables online. Points for not just how far you get and survive but also for handling challenges in certain ways. Also the old 1e Ghost Tower of Inverness was a competition module. Can do party scoring and also individual to determine multiple winners.
The original version of Hidden Shrine of Tamoachin had a score sheet. The idea was that you run the module at a conference. Each party of 3 players got a time limit of 2 hours at the table to play. They got scores based on actions performed and how many rooms they cleared. The 5e update of the module is available in Tales from the Yawning Portal. You can find a copy of the score sheet with a Google search, but you'll need to modify some of the actions to 5e spells. For example, in the first room, players get +3 points if they cast the Strength spell, presumably to help them open the stone door. The corresponding 5e spell would probably be Enhance Ability. I'd recommend making some pre-generated characters for players to choose from for this adventure, since the characters are likely to die and unlikely to have the correct equipment or skills for this particular dungeon (being able to speak Olman, for example, is very useful).
Seek out Matt Colville of MCDM he has a competition. People are posting their scores to his discord. I'm not sure all the details, but it's something people are genuinely looking at and evaluating.
