I remember when working on a character build there was a spell or trait that allowed me to pull information from a recently dead opponent however I cannot call its name or what specific class it was from. I know it wasn't speak with the dead it was something else. Can I anyone help me?
Phantom Rogue maybe be it, though if you look at the way the Phantom's powers play out, this is the level 9 Token of the Departed feature, and it's just one question. The mechanics otherwise limit the knowledge of the departed to a skill or tool proficiency.
On the other hand the College of Whispers Bard has "Mantle of Whispers" at sixth level. When you kill a humanoid you can take its shadow, you can opt to "wear" the shadow that will disguise you as the dead, and you gain access to "all information that the humanoid would freely share with a casual acquaintance." You won't know their secrets, but you'll know they're routine and people, except the aspects over which they're sworn to secrecy or otherwise beholden.
Would've figured Grave or Death domain clerics would have a feature in this wheelhouse, but no.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
Yeah, Grave/Death Clerics are more about trying to get the dead to shut up, rather than trying to listen to what they have to say. Then again, there's no saying that a Cleric can't use Animate Dead in order to revive the recent murder victim, so that they can find out who the real killer happens to be.
Animate Dead just turns them into a zombie or skeleton. Not a lot of conversation potential there.
Are you trying to tell me that Dead Men Tell No Tales? Pretty sure there are a few Reborn wandering the countryside, that would love to disagree. After all, the spell doesn't state that you resurrect them without the capability of free speech, especially if you order the zombie in question to tell you how it died, and/or wait until those 24 hours are up, then question it.
At 6th level, you gain the ability to adopt a humanoid's persona. When a humanoid dies within 30 feet of you, you can magically capture its shadow using your reaction. You retain this shadow until you use it or you finish a long rest.
You can use the shadow as an action. When you do so, it vanishes, magically transforming into a disguise that appears on you. You now look like the dead person, but healthy and alive. This disguise lasts for 1 hour or until you end it as a bonus action.
While you're in the disguise, you gain access to all information that the humanoid would freely share with a casual acquaintance. Such information includes general details on its background and personal life, but doesn't include secrets. The information is enough that you can pass yourself off as the person by drawing on its memories.
Another creature can see through this disguise by succeeding on a Wisdom (Insight) check contested by your Charisma (Deception) check. You gain a +5 bonus to your check.
Once you capture a shadow with this feature, you can't capture another one with it until you finish a short or long rest.
I had a race of beetles - a swarm, actually - that could destill the essences of living beings to gain memories or certain aspects of their nature. Like, um, without putting too fine a point on it, they'd need maybe an elf to create a potion of Cat's Grace. Irrelevant here, I guess, but sort of peripherally interesting perhaps.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

Zombies and skeletons "know all languages they understood in life but cannot speak." Per their statblocks. You can order it to talk all you want, but you're not going to get anything worthwhile from them.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

...Huh. I guess the dead really do tell no tales... ...Well, there's always Revivify/Resurrection spells, I guess. XD

That's the one! Gah, this is what happens when I just glaze over and just keep making characters; I forget the little things.
