Anyways, I'm making a tortle character. I heard somewhere that most tortles are Lawful Good. But how common are other things? For instance, would chaotic good be fairly good, or is that crazy for tortles? What about lawful neutral, or even lawful evil? Is it like 80% of tortles are Lawful Good, 10% are ____, 5% ____, etc.? Are is it that practically every tortle is Lawful Good? I'm just wondering how likely other things are.
"Generally, they are mostly ________, with some _____ and _____ also being common. You may also see some _____, ______, and ______, but they are less commons. _____, however, is almost unheard of and unnatural.
So if you want a ______, or a ______ or ______, those would work well. ______ and ______ aren't something you may see, but you could do them if you want to make a good character."
And maybe some things with lifestyle as well. How common are warriors, merchants, scammers, explorers, etc.
I mean, this is entirely setting dependent, and within that, location dependent, as with all alignments when you get down to it.
EG, tortles are usually lawful good, but if you go somewhere where the tortles work for a chaotic evil god in a town around a temple, then the majority of those tortles will be chaotic evil, or lawful evil.
At the end of the day, for making your character, there only needs to be one tortle with the relevant alignment - yours!
The selection of your alignment should mirror your total character development. The character's ancestry/heritage/rage is only one major component. Background and class should also play heavy in this choice.
Regarding you specific question, it is probably to come to an understanding as to what or "the why" that tends to make Tortles Lawful Good. Focus on the Lawful component first, and decide on a reason (structural culture, honor based, religious, etc). From there you can start to justify why your character has strayed from the norm. For example, you make a Neutral Good character because they believe that being honorable is determined by the moment and choices present; and not something that can be written as an absolute law.
Like other posters have stated, the alignment that fits the character you want to play is the alignment they should be. Good gaming and hope you have a fun campaign.
You can justify any alignment on any race (or no alignment at all, it's not required in 5e.)
Technically there's a handful of magic items or powers/effects that check or interact with alignment, so it's kind of a stretch to say you can skip it altogether. But race doesn't really have any bearing on alignment, particularly for PC's.
