The feature states, "While in the chosen phase, you can cast one 1st-level spell of the associated phase in the Lunar Spells table once without expending a spell slot." This seems very clear to me, but I've seen comments from other players that imply you'd be able to cast some of the higher level spells from the Lunar Spells table like Alter Self or Dispel Magic without using a spell slot. Either those people are crazy or I'm misunderstanding their comments, right? Surely it's only the 1st level spells, although it does beg the question "Why are the other spells in this table even associated with a lunar phase?"
You are correct. It is only the 1st level spells that can be cast for free once a day. The UA of the subclass had it that you could cast any of the lunar phase spells for free I think.
The subclass is weird in that in both the level 1 lunar spells feature and the level 6 waxing and waining feature both say that you can cast a first level Spell for your lunar phase and only your lunar phase. The level 6 feature says, “you can now” do it, implying it’s something new. What does this mean?
Level 1: Once per day you can cast the first level spell associated with the lunar phase you picked at the end of your long rest.
Level 6: If you spend a sorcery point as a bonus action, you can change your lunar phase. This allows you to do this above 3 times: once for each phase. (You can do the bonus action part more than 3 times, but you can still only cast the spell for free once per day).
In my interpretation it is basically saying you can cast the 1st level of each phase once, provided you switch to another phase than one you have already cast.
.IE level 1 LS (Lunar Sorcerer) is under full moon and casts shield at level one for free, now they have to long rest to not only swap forms but also to recharge the ability to cast shield for free once more
Level 6 LS is under full moon and casts shield at one, they then spend 1 sorcery point to swap phases to crescent moon and can then cast color spray for free at first level with the feature without needing to long rest.
I think its just a way of saying that it is the level 1 feature improved so it trumps the rules of level 1 and allows you to swap phases like a reduced cost spellcaster by exchanging 1 sorcery point for a 1st level rather than 2 sorcery points.
The other spells are there because you get them counted as prepared spells when you're in that phase. You may not get a free 3rd level spell cast but your phase lets you cast death ward as a 7th level LS with full moon without needing to pick it as a learned sorcerer spell. Its just options to make the sorcerer a more support centric caster depending on their moon phase.

You get all 15 Spells known, not just 5 from your lunar phase.
Well the only other thing I got than power creep in newer books is that the phases also just scale with the other 6th level feature that lowers metamagic costs by one from that phase. Like full moon letting you twin cast lesser restoration for 1 sorc point instead of 2
Wow the Lunar sorcerer is really ridiculous from a subclass standpoint.
