I have some NPS characters that I'd like to add legendary actions to, as well as perhaps lair actions. This may be a super simple question, but I've no idea how to do this. Right now I've created my NPCs as characters, which may have been a mistake as I don't see any way of adding things to them out of "raw". Normally this is fine, but for NPCs it limits things too much as I'm finding.
So, how do I go about creating an NPC, such as a magic user, who has lair actions and legendary actions? Is there an easy way to do this? And if I need to create them somewhere else in the D&D Beyond app is it possible to export the NPCs I've made already to that section or do I have to make them again from scratch?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!
So, to quickly clarify, it’s not that you’re having an issue of deciding what actions to add as legendary actions, nor figuring out an appropriate cost, but just how to go about adding Legendary Actions to a (PC) Character Sheet? By my memory, I’m pretty sure all you did was add text to an assigned patch on an NPC Monster Block. I’ll be curious to see if that’s changed depending on replies.
Yeah, exactly. I'd like to be able to add legendary actions to a PC character sheet as they really aren't monsters, per se. I did create an orc war chief and it was quite easy to add legendary actions to his character sheet -- As you said, there are places to put these things on the monster stat sheet. I don't think the same thing exists on character sheets but I may have easily missed them. Ideally they should be on the main page so they are easy to see so I don't forget about them.
NPCs in WotC's books are presented via "monster" stat blocks. The reason why there's no place for legendary or lair actions on the character sheet is because the game isn't designed for player characters to have legendary or lair actions. Among other things, NPCs aren't really designed to accommodate the granular growth decision making that accompanies developing a player character. (Monster stat blocks "growth" for NPCs can be seen in the Neverdeep book section on the "rival" party, it's quite good and I think pretty much kills most arguments for DMs insisting they create a fiche of character sheets for NPCs).
When I first got into 5e, I was making significant NPCs via the character creation process, but over time I've come to learn and appreciate the stat block method isn't only administratively streamlined but gives a DM far more creative flexibility than tying NPCs to the player character development process.
