Greetings! In older editions there really were no “Common” magic items as I play and DM I’ve been trying to work the common items into game play as well as into rewards. Some (clothes of mending) have obvious game uses. Others like cloak of Billowing are just fun cool items. Others are just of “ why did they waste magic making that?” Others i or players have found uses for in unusual ways - wand of bird calls - signaling party members when you don’t want obvious whistles/shouts/etc., immovable rod - activating it to have a hold to swing out farther to drop on a foe, stopping a fall. Do you have other interesting uses for some of these items, or are they mostly nonsense? Further, they are supposed to be common- so how do you fit them into your world’s economy?
The immovable rod has a great many uses. It can be used to make a convenient step or handhold, to stop yourself from falling after a jump, as a point to swing out from like a trapeze, as a solid anchor point to tie off a rope, to pin someone or something in place, to suddenly stop a vehicle… the uses are only limited by one’s imagination.
Common weapons, staffs, and ammo are still magic weapons and will get around resistance and immunity.
In my world I have magic shoppes called “Brokers,” less magic item outlet and more Pawn/Consignment shops for magic items. Common items and consumables are the bulk of their wares, uncommons are a nice find, and the really high-end brokers might even have a rare item or two. For lower level parties these brokers give the party something to spend money on, and at higher levels it gives them a place to offload items no longer wanted or useful to them. Brokers are also great sources of side quests and information.
My players found three Immovable rods and split the three between them. During one session they used their rods together to form a barred barrier on doorways when facing mindless zombies. They've also used it as make shift bars to lock doors closed for security.

Use two immovable rods to climb up. You could even climb into the open air this way.
