I've just got D&D Beyond, and I noticed something right of the bat.
Is D&D now a social media platform?
I mean, you get to talk about D&D related stuff with other people all around the world, join their campaigns, etc. I know I'm late to this as, again, I've just got this and last year got into D&D, but I still believe it is worth pointing out,
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

Yes. Yes, it is. Primarily in the off-topic section. There‘s a “like” system, there’s PM capability, there are friendgroups, there’s sometimes weird drama. But it’s much less social than a lot of other platforms (Twitter, Insta), if that helps. At its core, D&D is a game made for the real world, and the forums are just a small part of what DDB has to offer.
(Also, there’s a world of difference between this site and the real game. This is social media. D&D is just social.)
Hey, I’m moon, i‘m aged between 3 and 300. Pronouns are She/They/It/It’s/Them/Her. I love D&D. I am chaotic neutral irl. I’m not afraid to punch someone. Mess with me and you’ll find out the hard way. extended sig
I am the goddess of the moon, the tides, and the axolotls
Technically D&D itself is a social medium, just not a very wide-reaching one.

DDB is very much a social platform for corn, err I mean, grass, no, wait I mean, DDB is a social system for gaming, as an adjunct, and there are efforts afoot to make it a space where one can engage in social gaming as well as social interaction, all virtually.
They are stalking the competition, but I will leaf you with this kernel of wisdom:

D&D is not a social media platform - it is a game. It is a social game, but it is not a social media platform in and of itself. D&D Beyond is a social media platform in part - though its primary function is the digital tools, it still contains an online forum which, by definition, is a social media platform.
It has all the hallmarks of any social media platform. It has folks who are here to troll and folks who are here to help. It has its cliques and its users who just want to do their own thing. It has all the bigotry, hate, and ignorance endemic in both social media and gaming communities, and it has those who stand against it. It has useful discussions, spammy discussions, and useful discussions co-opted by spammy discussions. It allows misinformation to spread faster than common sense.
And, perhaps most importantly, it does what you said in your post - it allows people from all over the world to share their love of D&D.

Yes. This is what communities and social media looked like before Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc.

I mean, the forums are a medium by which social activities happen, so, by definition, yeah.
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
